The RheinEnergie is a day trip and event ship built by KD Europe S.à rl in 2003/04. It is used on a long-term charter by its parent company, the Cologne-Düsseldorf Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt . The shipping company's only catamaran , with a usable area of 2000 m², is the largest excursion ship on European inland waters . It is mainly used in scheduled traffic between Cologne and Bad Hönningen . For charter, special and event trips, it is used between Mainz and Düsseldorf . Its most prominent passenger was Pope Benedict XVI. , who blessed the believers on both sides of the Rhine from its open deck during World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne .

history

As a replacement for their outdated and uneconomical excursion ships Berlin and Wappen von Mainz , the Cologne-Düsseldorfer needed a ship that, in addition to the scheduled day trip traffic, should also be suitable for a wide variety of events. After the company Schiffstechnik Buchloh from Unkel had completed the construction plan according to the design by the Dutch designer Michiel Groendijk, which was favored by the shipping company , the construction contract was placed on July 15, 2003 at the De Hoop shipyard in Rijnwaarden . The keel was laid on November 21, 2003, the launch on April 22 of the following year. The shipyard delivered the catamaran manufactured under construction number 404 on June 16, 2004. The construction costs for the new ship amounted to 8 million  euros . The shipping company paid for this with a mortgage loan of 6 million euros running until the end of 2018 and a construction loan of 1.12 million euros and with own funds of 1.88 million euros, most of which came from the sale of the excursion ship Rüdesheim .

Pope Benedict XVI at RheinEnergie

After the official handover to the Cologne-Düsseldorfer on June 17, 2004 in Cologne, Claudia Kleinert, under the blessing of Cardinal Meisner and in the presence of the then Mayor of Cologne Fritz Schramma, baptized the ship in the name of RheinEnergie, a regional energy supplier with whom a long-term sponsorship contract was concluded has been. During the subsequent maiden voyage to Düsseldorf , RheinEnergie had to drop anchor below the Mülheim bridge due to an error message in the monitoring system of the propulsion system . When the machines and control system shut down, it turned out to be a software error, so the journey could continue afterwards. The commissioning took place on June 18, during which it was first used for four days as an event ship for the NRW days on the banks of the Rhine in Cologne-Deutz . The first scheduled traffic trip took place on July 2, 2004 between Bad Breisig and Rüdesheim .

At the World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne, the RheinEnergie was used as a festival ship on August 18th. Pope Benedict XVI blessed more than 600,000 pilgrims who had gathered on both sides of the Rhine from the front open deck during his welcome trip .

In December 2008, the ship was sold to the wholly owned subsidiary KD Europe S.à rl in Luxembourg and then registered in Valletta , Malta in January 2009 . Since the ships of the Cologne-Düsseldorfer cannot reach their home port due to lack of seaworthiness, they are serviced in the Niehler Hafen in Cologne.

The State House could not be used at the Amphi Festival 2016 , a third festival stage next to the two indoor stages was set up for the first time at RheinEnergie .

On the night of September 1, 2018, the ship ran aground during a party trip in Cologne at around 9:30 p.m. The Rhine had low water at this time. There were six injured and the ship was arrested by the police for accident analysis.
