1967 NBA draft

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1967 NBA Draft was conducted on May 3, 1967 at Madison Square Garden in New York City , New York . It consisted of 20 rounds and a total of 162 players were selected. The college players were distributed to 12 teams. The prerequisite was that you had attended college for four years or that the respective year had graduated. The first two picks were assigned to the two worst teams from the previous season. Those teams were the Baltimore Bullets and the Detroit Pistons , each finishing last in their division. Which team would get the first and which the second pick was decided by tossing a coin . The Detroit Pistons got the first pick and Baltimore the second. The remaining players were distributed to the teams in the reverse order of the previous season's final scores. The San Diego Rockets and Seattle SuperSonics had just joined the NBA and were about to begin their first season. Therefore, they received the sixth and seventh picks in the first rounds and the last two players in each of the following rounds.

Jimmy Walker of Providence College was the first to be drafted by the Pistons. Earl Monroe , the eventual winner of the Rookie of the Year Awards , was drafted second from Baltimore. Monroe and Walt Frazier were the most successful players of this year. They became NBA champions together with the New York Knicks in 1973, made it into the selection of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History and even made it into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame . Together with Jimmy Walker and Bob Rule , they are also the only players from this year who took part in an NBA All-Star Game . Mel Daniels , who opted for it in the ABA , was elected MVP there and was one of the best players in the ABA.

Pat Riley and Phil Jackson became very successful coaches in the NBA after their active careers. Riley won the Coach of the Year Award three times in a row , something that only Don Nelson achieved. Jackson is the most successful coach in NBA history with 11 NBA championships (6 with the Chicago Bulls and 5 with the Los Angeles Lakers ). Both were named as one of the top 10 coaches as part of the naming of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History . They were also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach .

The first pick, Jimmy Walker, was also drafted last in the NFL and the first pick of the NFL draft, Bubba Smith , was also drafted in the NBA. Both played no game in the other league.
