BW

Niederleis is a municipality with 891 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Mistelbach district in Lower Austria .

geography

Niederleis is located in the Weinviertel in Lower Austria on the south-eastern edge of the Leiser Berge . The place name comes from Slavonic (last state of place name research). "Lysa" means "bald spot" and should refer to the area around the village.

The area of the municipality covers 19.54 square kilometers. 10.77 percent of the area is forested. There were six mills in Niederleis (Proske, Schuster, Danninger, Krisch, Schierer and Hohenfellner mill).

Niederleis is located on the southern slope of the Buschberg . The small Taschlbach coming from Au flows through the whole place and forms the (big) Taschlbach after its union with other brooks near Kleinsitzendorf .

Community structure

The municipality includes the following four localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Help (68)
  • Small Seat Village (12)
  • Niederleis (652) including the birch settlement
  • Nodendorf (159)

The community consists of the cadastral communities Helfens, Kleinsitzendorf, Niederleis and Nodendorf.

Neighboring communities

Gnadendorf , Asparn an der Zaya , Ladendorf , Großrußbach and Ernstbrunn border on Niederleis (clockwise from the north) .

history

The place was founded by German settlers from Franconia in the 11th century. They also brought the "three-field economy" to this area (Winterfeld, Sommerfeld, fallow). The place name only appears later in some documents.

In the last days of the Second World War , between April 20 and 21, 1945, Niederlei was the scene of violent and varied fighting between troops of the Wehrmacht and the Red Army , in which 11 civilians were killed, 37 buildings were destroyed by fire and three bridges were blown up were.

Nodendorf

The place Nodendorf was mentioned for the first time between 1120 and 1130 as "Gnanendorf" (manor). In the place there was a manorial mill (Heiligenkreuz), the location of which could be localized with the house number 11 (mill with attached smithy). At the end of the village to the south there was a brick oven until the 1920s (2 buildings are still preserved). The local chapel built in 1928 instead of a wooden chapel in the center of Nodendorf bears the name of the Mother of God. It was consecrated on September 16, 1928. A mighty table mountain rises to the north of the village, the Oberleiser Berg at 457 m. Nodendorf had its own fire brigade until 1971. Laaer Straße (B6) runs through the village , on which, due to the fall of the “Iron Curtain”, there has been a strong increase in traffic in recent years.

Help

Helfens is the southernmost cadastral community and was first mentioned in 1150 as "de helphansdorf" (village of helphan). Until 1924 there was a wooden chapel on the edge of the forest east of the village, then in 1926 a stone building, today's local chapel, was built. At the southern end of the village stood the "Vogelsang mill". Helfens has had a volunteer fire brigade since 1951. Another “modern” landmark of the place are the wind turbines at the Hipples wind farm , one of which is located in the Helfen area.

Small seat village

With eight houses, Kleinsitzendorf is the smallest cadastral community. The first documentary mention goes back to 1380. At that time there was talk of “siczendorf” (village of the Sizzo). Until 1945 there was a manorial mill (Sinzendorfer) in the village, which was removed after the Second World War. The townscape is shaped by the flowing Taschlbach and the chapel, actually a bell tower, which had to change location twice due to the realignment of the federal highway 40.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was awarded to the municipality on June 30, 2001.

Blazon : split by a silver bar, in front four silver heraldic lilies in green, two and two placed diagonally to the right, behind in red an upright crowned golden griffin, holding a golden stone in his paws.

“The elements of the coat of arms have the following meaning: the green ground stands for agriculture and the nature park - 4 silver heraldic lilies symbolize the 4 churches in our cadastral parishes - the crowned golden griffin on a red background comes from the coat of arms of the Schaffgotsch family in Niederleis has been based since 1928 - and the silver bar in the middle stands for the Taschlbach, which rises here and flows into the Zaya at Mistelbach "

  • Niederleis Castle : The first documentary mention was made in 1310, the current building dates from the 16th century. The lords of Leis (Lizze) are already mentioned several times at the time of the first Babenbergs, but there was a place of the same name near Scheibbs. In the first half of the 15th century the Polheimer and Fritzendorfer landlords could have been, at the end of the century Wolfgang von Ludmannsdorf, after which the property split up. In the Thirty Years' War the rule came to the Breunner and Lobkowitz families. In the 17th century the castle was owned by the Heiligenkreuz Abbey , during which time there were significant structural changes. Abbot Michael Schnabel acquired the estate in 1651. The Kaisersteinbruch master stonemasons worked here and made Kaiserstein workpieces in the castle. In the monastery archive there are some invoices from the years 1655–1657 relating to the brothers Ambrosius and Giorgio Regondi . In 1867, Count Maximilian von Wallis acquired the rule. Under his son, Count Josef Wallis, who took over the property in 1882, the castle experienced a late heyday. He was a friend of Count Wilczek , who is known as the builder of Kreuzenstein and like him a great art patron and collector. In 1928 his niece Anna Schaffgotsch inherited the Niederleis castle and estate, in whose family it has been since then. Many art treasures, such as valuable German and Italian furniture, precious Spanish leather wallpapers or Flemish tapestries are waiting for the visitors. The showpiece of the collection is a large cross above the Spanish baroque altar in the palace chapel. It dates from the 14th century and is attributed to the Giotto school . The interior is from the 19th century. In 1968 the palace and park were the main locations for Moos auf den Steinen , the film that film scholars now consider to be the first work of the New Austrian Film .
  • Catholic parish church Niederleis Assumption of Mary: The first parish church (late Gothic style) was on the way from Niederleis to Kleinsitzendorf, in the so-called church cemetery, outside the village. In 1809 the church (Maria im Felde) burned down and was not rebuilt. In contrast, between 1810 and 1814, today's church was built in place of the village chapel. It is a simple hall building in the classical style and was inaugurated in 1814 by Prince Archbishop Anton Sigismund von Hohenwart zu Gerlachstein. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. In 2010 the parish celebrated the 875th anniversary of its foundation. At the same time, the interior renovation was completed. In 2013 the square in front of the parish church was redesigned and paved. On August 15, 2014, the parish celebrated the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the parish church of the Assumption of Mary with a festive service. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the war against the Prussians and in memory of the construction of the cholera chapel in the south of Niederleis, the renovated chapel was blessed by Dean Walter Pischtiak in May 2016.
  • Niederleis Local History Museum: The local history museum has existed since 1977 and documents the local history on an area of 180 m². A visit is possible at any time by prior arrangement.

nature

Numerous hiking trails lead through the 45 km² large nature park Leiser Berge . The Buschberghütte of the Austrian Alpine Association (built in 1937) is located on the Buschberg , the highest elevation in the Weinviertel at 491 m . The Oberleis observation tower , built in 1970, stands on the Oberleiser Berg , on the ground floor of which the exhibition 6000 Years of Oberleis Residential Mountain has been on view since 1986 .

economy

In 2001 there were 27 non-agricultural workplaces, and according to the 1999 survey there were 32 in agriculture and forestry. The number of people in work at home was 351 according to the 2001 census. In 2001, the activity rate was 47.12 percent.
