The 1948 Olympic champion , Fanny Blankers-Koen (NED), who was also European champion and world record holder, did not take part in the semifinals due to illness in order to concentrate fully on the 80-meter hurdles .
The Australian Marjorie Jackson, winner of the British Empire Games 1950 , was now the favorite for the Olympic victory. In both the semifinals and the finals, she set the world record . She won the race as superior as no other 100-meter Olympic champion before with three tenths of a second ahead of the South African Daphne Hasenjager and her compatriot Shirley Strickland, later Shirley de la Hunty.
Daphne Hasenjager won South Africa's first Olympic medal in the women's 100 meters.
