The women's discus throw at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro was played on August 15 and 16, 2016 in the Estádio Nilton Santos . 34 athletes took part.

The Olympic champion was the Croatian Sandra Perković . The French Mélina Robert-Michon won silver ahead of the Cuban Denia Caballero .

All three German participants reached the final. Nadine Müller was sixth, Julia Fischer ninth and Shanice Craft eleventh.
Athletes from Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein did not take part.

qualification

The athletes competed in two groups for a qualifying round. The qualification distance required for direct participation in the finals was 62.00 m. Since only eight throwers exceeded this distance - highlighted in light blue, the final field was filled with the following best throwers from both groups to a total of twelve participants - highlighted in light green. So finally 60.23 m had to be thrown to reach the final.

In the final, each participant initially had three attempts, the length of the qualifying round was not counted. The best eight athletes then had three more attempts, the last four were eliminated.

Twelve athletes had qualified for the final, eight of them by qualifying distance and another four by their placements. Three Germans and three Chinese each qualified. There were also two Cubans and one participant each from Australia, France, Croatia and Lithuania.

The 2012 Olympic champion , 2013 world champion and 2015 vice world champion Sandra Perković from Croatia and 2015 world champion Denia Caballero from Cuba were considered favorites. Other medal contenders, the three German Nadine Müller belonged WM -Third of 2015, Julia Fischer, Vice European Champion in 2016 and World Cup -Fünfte of 2015, and Shanice Craft, EM -Third of 2014 and 2016. Another candidate was the French vice-European champion of 2014 Mélina Robert-Michon.

In the first round Robert-Michon took the lead with 65.52 m, followed by the Chinese Su Xinyue - 63.88 m - and the Australian Dany Samuels - 63.57 m. As in qualification, Perković started with two failed attempts. In the third round she threw the discus to 69.21 m and took the top position. In the same lap, Caballero had advanced to third place with 65.34 m. Mélina Robert-Michon improved in the fifth attempt to 66.73 m, with which she set a new French national record, but remained on the silver rank. Dani Samuels scored 64.90 m in the last round and was fourth. Gold went to the favorite Sandra Perković, Bronze went to Denia Caballero. The Chinese Su Xinyue came in fifth ahead of Nadine Müller.
