The GDR took part in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid with a delegation of 53 (36 men, 17 women) athletes and took second place in the medal ranking behind the USSR . The biathlete Frank Ullrich became the most successful athlete in the GDR team with three medals. Figure skater Jan Hoffmann was chosen as the flag bearer of the GDR team for the opening ceremony.

With Frank Ullrich, a biathlete became the most successful GDR participant. He won a medal in every competition and was Olympic champion over the sprint distance . Eberhard Rösch won another individual medal. The other two biathletes did not go away empty-handed because of the relay silver.

The bobsleigh riders made the competitions extremely successful and won four of six possible medals, including the Olympic victory in the four-man bobsleigh. The victorious four-man bobsleigh consisted of the two starting two-man bobsleigh teams.

Speed skating
The GDR athletes returned as the most successful speed skating team with four medals. Karin Enke started her great career with the Olympic victory over 500 m. Andrea Mitscherlich, who won silver in 1976 , was left empty-handed at Lake Placid.
The men's decisions were overshadowed by the outshining five-time Olympic champion Eric Heiden . However, Andreas Dietel was able to achieve a remarkable 4th place over 1500 m.

Sledding
The luge riders finished the competitions as the most successful nation. They were able to win medals in all three competitions, with the men's and doubles competition being able to be won. The 1976 Olympic champion , Margit Schumann, ended her career with a 6th place.

The cross-country skiers crowned their good performances at previous world championships with two Olympic victories in three decisions, with Barbara Petzold standing out as a double Olympic champion.
With Alf-Gerd Deckert, who achieved a respectable 9th place over 30 km, there was only one athlete in the men’s race.

Ski jumping
Ironically, the 18-year-old youngster Manfred Deckert won the only medal, silver on the small hill. Apart from him, no other jumper made it into the top ten.
