The women's biathlon 10km pursuit at the 2002 Winter Olympics was held in Soldier Hollow on February 10th . Of the 60 best athletes in the sprint competition , 52 from 21 nations started.

Kati Wilhelm , who had already won the sprint, was the first to go into the cross-country ski run with a lead of 16 seconds over her compatriot Uschi Disl . Magdalena Forsberg from Sweden and Liv Grete Poirée from Norway took up the chase, 39 and 43 seconds respectively . After the first shooting, Wilhelm dropped back to sixth with three shooting errors. Disl also made two mistakes and so Forsberg was able to take the lead from Poirée, who had to complete a penalty loop, with a faultless shooting.

However, the two leaders failed in the second shooting and had to run a penalty loop. Wilhelm, however, did better and hit all five targets. The Slovenian Andreja Grašič and the Bulgarian Irina Nikultschina , who already made no mistakes in the first shooting, were able to call this performance again. So the two of them took up the pursuit of the leading Forsberg with Wilhelm.

Poirée and Forsberg both cleared the third shooting and left the shooting range together after the Swede lost some time while running on the Norwegian. Nikultschina and Grašič, who shot for the third time without errors, followed the duo with a deficit of five seconds and 15 seconds respectively. Wilhelm, on the other hand, missed the target with her fourth shot and fell back to fifth place, 30 seconds behind. She was followed at short intervals by Disl, the French Florence Baverel-Robert and the two Russian Galina Kuklewa and Olga Pyljowa .

The last shooting was a real thriller. Nikultschina had caught up with Poirée and Forsberg and everyone came together to the shooting range. However, each of the athletes showed nerves and so they each shot twice. While the leading trio was in the penalty loop, the chasing group began shooting for the medal ranks. The French Baverel-Robert missed twice and Disl's poor shooting performance continued with three more penalties. Grašič and Kuklewa also made a mistake and were no longer involved in the battle for the podium. Wilhelm and Pyljowa, however, each met all five and went to the final round together. Forsberg, Skjelbreid-Poirée and Nikultschina also went into the last lap together, but were already more than 10 seconds behind the duo at the top. In the end, the Russian prevailed with a lead of 5 seconds over Wilhelm and thus secured the Olympic victory. In the battle for bronze, Forsberg had it demolished. Despite the second-best running time on the last lap, Poirée was unable to prevail in the duel against the former cross-country skier Nikultschina, because she ran the fastest time on the last lap and thus secured the bronze medal.
