The men's biathlon 12.5 km pursuit at the 2002 Winter Olympics was held in Soldier Hollow on February 16 . Of the 60 best athletes in the sprint competition , 57 from 23 nations started.

The Norwegian Ole Einar Bjørndalen , who had already won the sprint, was the first to enter the cross-country ski run with a margin of 29 seconds over the German Sven Fischer . Wolfgang Perner from Austria and Ricco Groß from Germany took up the chase, 53 seconds behind . World Cup winner and defending champion Raphael Poirée from France was another favorite, but started one minute and six seconds behind. The reigning world champion Pawel Rostowzew from Russia started with almost a minute behind Bjørndalen in sixth.

In the first shooting, Bjørndalen missed a shot, the two Germans Fischer and Groß, unlike Perner, stayed clear and were able to shorten the gap to 14 seconds. Bjørndalen cleared the second and third stages. While one shot missed the target in his last shooting. However, at this point his lead was well over a minute and so he won his third gold medal at these games despite the penalty loop. No biathlete had ever achieved this before.

After the second shooting, Fischer and Groß left the shooting range together because Fischer made a mistake. However, when he had to complete a penalty loop again on the third stage, he fell back. Poirée seized the opportunity with three clean shoots and continued to work his way forward. Groß came to the last shooting with about 25 seconds ahead of the French. There the German showed his nerve and shot his first two penalties, Poirée remained clear and was able to defend his lead of 20 seconds to the finish and secured silver. The Austrian Ludwig Gredler , who was a good 25 seconds behind Groß after the last shooting, caught up and crossed the finish line just four seconds after the German and finished fourth. Fischer, who started the race second, was only twelfth due to his four penalties.

Competition description

The 60 best athletes from the previous sprint race qualified for the 12.5 km pursuit . The winner of the sprint went into the race first, the other athletes started with the time gap they had at the finish of the sprint. Five laps of equal length had to be completed; after the first four, the athletes had to hit five targets at the shooting range in the order lying-lying-standing-standing. For each target not hit, the athlete had to complete a 150-meter penalty loop. The winner was whoever crossed the finish line first.
