background

The title refers to the so-called penny dreadful novels similar to the German-language penny novels that were cheap fictional publications in Victorian Britain and dealt with appalling, sensational subjects. The series is based on many public domain characters from the 19th century, the Irish and British literature as Dorian Gray of Oscar Wilde's work The Picture of Dorian Gray , Mina Harker , Abraham van Helsing and Dracula of Bram Stoker's Dracula , Victor Frankenstein and Frankenstein's monster from Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein and Henry Jekyll from Robert Louis Stevenson's epic novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde .

Cast and dubbing

The German synchronization of the series was carried out by Cinephon Filmproduktions GmbH, Berlin. Helen Wilke and Peter Minges wrote a dialogue book. The latter also directs the dialogue.

Production and development

In January 2013 it was announced that Showtime had secured the rights to the series. Logan and Mendes previously wrote and directed the script together at Skyfall . Production of the series began in London in the second half of 2013. David Nevins, Chairman of Showtime, announced that the flair of the entire series will be "very realistic and very informed, not Bela Lugosi ". “All exist in human form at the turn of the century in London.” A lifelong fan of literary monsters, Logan was initially lucky enough to write the project and will now write the script for every episode of the series. It was intended that Mendes would direct all episodes, but the schedule prevented this.

In March 2013 it was announced that the series would be filmed in the UK, as a new tax reform for the domestic film industry is granting a tax rebate of 25%. However, it was announced in August 2013 that the production would instead take place in Brays Ardmore Studios and other locations around Dublin , Ireland, due to the tax benefits under Section 481 . Filming began on October 7, 2013 and lasted five months. Reportedly, the move was also due to a lack of adequately sized stage space, as more major film productions were being shot in London at the time.

In May 2013, Juan Antonio Bayona announced that he would direct when the series begins production in September 2013. Bayona directed the first two episodes of the first season, which will consist of eight episodes in total. Irish director Dearbhla Walsh will direct episodes 3 and 4, episodes 5 and 6 by Coky Giedroyc and episodes 7 and 8 by James Hawes .

In December 2013, Showtime announced the very first production blog for a series with the launch of The Penny Dreadful Production Blog . The blog gives viewers an online behind-the-scenes look at how the series was produced, from the first filming in Ireland to the end of season one, and includes interviews with the actors and the production team. The blog has its own website and the videos are also published on YouTube .

On February 14, 2014, the first full-length official trailer of the series was released by Showtime.
