Peter Pieper
Peter Pieper (born April 16, 1953 in Bochum ) is a German prehistorian , runologist and forensic archaeologist .
Life
Pieper attended the Vinzenz Pallotti boarding school in Rheinbach and the state high school in Bochum . After graduating from high school in 1972, he did two years of community service at the St. Elisabeth Hospital in Bochum. From 1974 he studied classical archeology ( Bernard Andreae , Klaus Fittschen ), prehistory and early history ( Gerhard Mildenberger ), ancient history ( Géza Alföldy , Karl-Wilhelm Welwei ) and art history ( Max Imdahl , Manfred Wundram ) at the Ruhr University Bochum . After three semesters, he moved to the Georg-August University in Göttingen . He majored in Prehistory and Protohistory with Klaus Raddatz , Jürgen Driehaus , Herbert Jankuhn and Gerhard Bosinski . As a minor he studied classical archeology with Hartmut Döhl and Christof Boehringer , Egyptology with Wolfhart Westendorf and Friedrich Junge , Near Eastern archeology with Klaus Schippmann and art history with Karl Arndt . He also took paleoanthropology with László von Károlyi, paleoethnobotanics with Ulrich Willerding , palynology and climatic dynamics with Hans-Jürgen Beug , archaeobotany and vegetation history with Karl-Ernst Behre and paleopathology with Michael Schultz . He wrote his doctoral thesis with Renate Rolle . In 1987 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate (“very good”). After that he was excavation manager at the Lower Saxony State Office for Monument Preservation in Braunschweig for two years . On May 1, 1990, he went to his mentor Wolfgang Bonte at the University of Düsseldorf , where he worked as an expert in archaeological forgeries , forensic osteology , taphonomy and paleography at the Institute for Forensic Medicine in the University Hospital Düsseldorf . In 1993 he was one of the organizers of the World Congress of the International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS). He succeeded in reconstructing the wound in Wolfgang Grams' case ( GSG-9 deployment in Bad Kleinen ).
Work areas
Pieper's scientific interest is particularly paleoanthropology and paleopathology (especially osteology ), runology and dactyloscopy , experimental archeology (processing and engraving, e.g. of bones ) and materials science.
As the world's first forensic archaeologist, Pieper is also involved in the investigation of crimes , some of which occurred a long time ago. This interdisciplinary field of forensics was reopened , not least through the lifting of the statute of limitations for murder through the amendment of Section 78 (2) StGB in 1979, because every homicidal offense has since been investigated. Pieper has been studying nail-pierced skulls of executed people as well as body marks , mummified hands of victims of medieval and early modern homicides for years . He proved years of unexplained infant murder and dealt with fraud and forgery in science . He is also a recognized specialist in bog corpses .
Using Germanic wooden swords, he proved that the Roman general Germanicus had returned to the site of the Varus Battle on his so-called vengeance campaign in 15 AD . He identified soldiers of the United States Air Force who had been shot down with their bombers near Nienburg / Weser in 1944 . He examined several bog bodies from the Oldenburg State Museum for Nature and Man and the Lower Saxony State Museum Hanover . Among them were the boy from Kayhausen , the man from Jührdenerfeld , the girl from Bareler Moor , the man from Husbäke in 1931 , the man from Husbäke in 1936 and the man from New England . Pieper also examined Otto von Linn's skeleton .
Pieper has been working with the world's leading Göttingen runologist Klaus Düwel for decades . The two autopsied many old and new finds together. Unlike the Weser rune bones, the runes found in Deventer turned out to be forgeries with a National Socialist background. Pieper's probably most significant achievement was the deciphering of the eponymous mirror runes on the burial urns from Spong Hill in Norfolk , England ; they were adopted as mirrored runes in the English language . Pieper also described the microrunes , the smallest rune inscriptions known to date.
Fencing master
In the Corps Neoborussia-Berlin zu Bochum (1974) he distinguished himself as a sub-senior and consenior . In the Göttingen Corps Teutonia-Hercynia (1975) he was able to clip the consenior twice . From 1979 he completed his training to become a qualified fencing teacher at the Association of Fencing Masters in Marburg . In 1980, further training followed in Erlangen, Nuremberg and Bayreuth , which he completed with the VdF fencing master's certificate. In 1980, "the fast beeper" became a fencing master at the University of Göttingen, a later successor to the Göttingen Saxon Hans von Goldacker (1910–1970). The Academy of Fencing Art in Germany accepted him in 1996 as Maître d'académie d'armes international .
