The FC Pohang Steelers is a football club from Pohang , South Korea . He currently plays as a franchisee in the K League Classic , the top division in South Korea.

history

The club was founded in 1973 as an amateur team under the name POSCO and is now one of the most successful teams in South Korea. In 1984 the club was professionalized and renamed itself POSCO Dolphins . Just a year later the name was changed again to POSCO Atoms .

In 1986 the club celebrated its first championship in the premiere season of the newly created K-League . It is interesting for statisticians in that the club had more defeats than wins and a negative goal difference. From 1986 to 1998 the team was one of the best in South Korea. They did not finish a season worse than 4th place and were three times champion and three times runner-up in this period. In addition, he won the first national cup competition in 1996.

In 1995 the name was changed to Pohang Atom before the club was given its current name in 1997. By winning the South Korean Cup competition in 1996, the Steelers qualified for the Asian Club Championship , which they also won and were even able to defend the following year. After that, this successful era of the Pohang Steelers ended and you could only be runner-up and runner-up cup winner. In 2007, the team became champions again and moved into the cup final. The defeat in the final was corrected a year later when they won the cup for the second time. In 2009, the Steelers won the AFC Champions League after beating the Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad Jeddah in the final . At the Club World Cup they came in third.

In the 2012 season, the team took 3rd place in the K-League. In 2013 she became champions and won the FA Cup and was the first team to get this double .

Stadion

The Pohang Steelers have been playing their games in the Steel Yard Stadium since 1991 . It has a capacity of 25,000 and was the first football stadium in South Korea.
