The 1981 season of the Primera División was the 78th season (the 50th of the professional era) of the Uruguayan top division in men's football , the Primera División .
The Primera División consisted of 15 clubs in the championship season of 1981, whose teams met twice in a total of 210 championship games played from the end of March to mid-December of the year. 555 goals were scored. The championship won the Club Atlético Peñarol as first table in front of Nacional Montevideo and the Montevideo Wanderers as second and third in the season final table . Centro Atlético Fénix had to relegate to the Segunda División . Peñarol and Club Atlético Defensor qualified for the 1982 Copa Libertadores .
Furthermore, a playoff game for 6th place and thus for the starting place in the Liguilla Pre-Libertadores between Defensor and Miramar Misiones was played, which Defensor decided 2-1 in his favor.
A relegation playoff round between Rampla Juniors and Liverpool FC was also played in three games. After the Rampla Juniors lost their first game 0-1, but won the second game 2-1, the third meeting ended with a 0-0 draw. In the penalty shootout, the Rampla Juniors prevailed 5: 4. Liverpool were allowed to remain first class, however.
The top scorer was Rubén Paz from master Peñarol with 17 goals .
