Psycho Circus was a tour started in 1999 by the hard rock group Kiss .

background

After the reunification of the founding members of “ MTV Unplugged ” in 1996 and 1997, Kiss completed an extremely successful tour (Alive / Worldwide Tour). The concert tour included 192 concerts in 24 countries; the individual events had an average of 13,737 visitors. A feature of the tour was the use of a replica of the Love Gun stage with which the group had embarked on their most successful tour of the 1970s and which had gained worldwide fame through the illustrations on the fold-out cover of the album Alive II .

On September 22, 1998, the group released their 18th studio album, produced by Bruce Fairbairn , entitled Psycho Circus . This was the first publication by the group's founding formation since Dynasty in 1979.

Changes to the stage included the use of two large band logos on the left and right sides of the stage; Until then, the group had usually used a single, centrally positioned logo at their concerts. The drum riser was no longer lifted by a hydraulic system, as is usually the case, but rather pulled up on chains so that one could see through under it. This and the use of fog effects on the underside of the drum riser created a floating effect. The most striking feature of the stage show, where the group wore replicas of their 1976 costumes, was the use of 3D effects. To make this possible, Nocturne Productions was commissioned with the implementation, which decided to use stereoscopic 3D, in which viewers had to wear glasses with polarized lenses, which they received at the entrance to the venue.

During the concerts, pre-produced video films and live recordings made with 3D cameras were shown on the video walls ; A symbol was displayed in good time for the audience so that they knew that they had to put on their glasses. This made it possible to create effects such as picks flying into the auditorium or guitars stretched out in the opposite direction. Originally, the management had also pursued the idea of having artists and clowns perform before each concert so that the tour would be accompanied by a real circus, but no agreement could be made with the artists, so the idea was just before the dress rehearsal on Was dropped October 30, 1998. The circus members still performed at the premiere concert on October 31 in Los Angeles.

Musically, she left the group on the proven setlist with mostly old material (with an emphasis on the years 1975, 1976 and 1977), only three tracks from Psycho Circus were added.

Concert cancellations

A total of five scheduled appointments had to be canceled, including the three concerts in Moscow and Saint Petersburg , which on 28 March 1998 by the NATO - air attack of 24 March in Kosovo were canceled for security reasons. In addition, one concert each planned for Santiago de Chile ( Chile ) and Montevideo ( Uruguay ) was canceled.

US tour

On October 30, 1998, the dress rehearsal for the first concert of the tour took place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles , in which numerous members of the music label Mercury Records and other invited guests took part. Also, Bruce Kulick , 1984-1995 guitarist of the band, was among the guests of the sample. The tour started on October 31 (Halloween), when the group performed in front of 32,019 spectators in Los Angeles. On the same day, FOX broadcast a (recorded) program of the series Mad TV , in which Kiss played the host role and the group or individual members of the band played in some skits . The station then broadcast the half-hour KISS LIVE - The Ultimate Halloween Party , during which the songs Psycho Circus and Let Me go, Rock 'n Roll (replaced by Shout it out Loud on the west coast of the USA ) were recorded live. The concert was also broadcast live on the radio; PepsiCo funded the broadcast on the Internet. The set list at this concert also included the songs Nothin 'to Lose and She, which were not played again during the rest of the tour.

In the period up to January 2, 1999, the band performed at another 32 concerts in the United States. The concert on December 12, 1998 in Terre Haute , the founding place of the Kiss Army fan club , was recorded and parts of it were used for the "Tour Edition" of Psycho Circus , which was released on February 22, 1999 in Europe . In addition to the regular CD, this edition of the album included an EP with six live tracks. On December 16, 1998, in Omaha , Paul Stanley had a seven-year-old security guards pull him out of the crowd after he was hit in the face with an elbow. The boy was allowed to watch the rest of the concert from the stage and then met the group members.

The tour was interrupted for almost four weeks after the concert on January 2, 1999 in Nashville , before the group completed the first concert of their European tour in Helsingfors .

The European tour began in Finland on February 26th. Since Paul Stanley had undergone knee surgery, he wore an orthopedic splint on his left leg for the rest of the tour. The concert tour took the group through Oslo , Stockholm (2 dates) and Gothenburg (2 dates), all of which were sold out, to Germany . At the concert on March 7, 1999 in Berlin, Paul Stanley began to sing the first verse of the Deutschlandlied ("Deutschland, Deutschland, über alles ..."), but was immediately interrupted by Gene Simmons, who was watching the first verse in the was apparently known to public opinion . Stanley was evidently of the erroneous assumption that the text was the German national anthem . He was then whistled and booed by parts of the audience .

Another incident occurred in Bremen on March 12th after the building regulations office prohibited the use of any pyrotechnic objects. Paul Stanley explained this fact to the audience with the help of a translator, but also mentioned that the band had brought with them everything that belongs to a Kiss concert, ie “smoke, fire and bombs”. You can stop and stop everything, but you can "never stop" Kiss ("You can never stop Kiss!"). The concert then took place without any effects, but after the last song of the encore, Black Diamond, was from the Roadies ignited the band the total installed pyrotechnics at once.

The trip to Russia planned for the beginning of April 1999 was canceled ( see here ); instead, the group first went back to the USA.

Originally this concert was supposed to take place at the Estadio José Amalfitani , but it was moved to the Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti on March 4, 1999 when it became clear that the concert date would collide with a football match at the Estadio José Amalfitani. This concert was shown on May 1, 1999 on Argentinian television. The dates in Santiago de Chile (April 13) and Montevideo (April 15) were canceled, on April 15 the group was instead on stage in Porto Alegre , Brazil .
