history
The community was formed on June 7, 1969 from the previously independent communities Berghausen (2365 inhabitants at the time), Heiligenstein (2165 E.) and Mechtersheim (2216 E.). Since the community is located on the old Roman road, the name Römerberg found the approval of all three districts as a neutral designation.
The oldest community was Mechtersheim, which was first mentioned in 1035 when the Archbishop of Mainz donated an estate to the Benedictine monastery in Eussertal . In 1148 this was taken over by Cistercian monks . Heiligenstein was in 1190 under the name Sacred first mentioned when the cathedral chapter to Speyer the village as a collection center for donations ( tithe tax called). A church is already attested in 1235. Just two years later as Heiligenstein, Berghausen was mentioned as Berchhusen in 1192 . There is evidence of a church there for 1268. There is also evidence of an old chapel in the Altenhof in Mechtersheim. The Protestant church in Mechtersheim was built in 1877/79 and was rebuilt in its current form after it was destroyed in World War II in 1949/52. The Catholic Church was built in 1892/93.
On June 26, 2019, the highest temperature ever recorded in the Palatinate was recorded in Römerberg in June at 37.3 degrees.
