The R216 ( Cyrillic. Р216 ) is a highway federal significance in Russia . In the foothills of the Caucasus , it connects Astrakhan , the administrative center of Astrakhan Oblast in the Volga Delta , via the Kalmyk capital Elista over a total of almost 600 kilometers with Stavropol , the center of the Stavropol region .
After leaving the lowland with many lakes on the western edge of the Volga Delta, the road initially leads through a predominantly semi-desert landscape, later, especially south of the Manytn lowlands , through intensively agriculturally used steppe area . The road is paved and mostly two-lane.
The street was given the number R216 in 2010. Previously it was numbered A154.

history
During the Second World War, the German Wehrmacht advanced quickly along today's R216 in the summer of 1942, initially via Elista in the direction of Astrakhan. At the end of August, the German troops were stopped in front of the village of Chulchuta (then also called Chalchuta) a good 125 kilometers from the Astrakhan outskirts and the Red Army engaged them in positional battles that lasted until the end of November 1942 . This was, possibly apart from brief, smaller commando operations , the most easterly point that the German troops reached during the entire war. In 1975 a memorial was erected on the road west of Chulchuta to commemorate the 28th Soviet Army.
