The R56 ( Russian Р56 ) is a trunk road of federal importance in Russia . 251 km road connects the northwest of Russia the big cities Veliky Novgorod , the administrative center of Novgorod Oblast and Pskov , center of Pskov Oblast .

The road branches off the federal trunk road M10 Rossija northeast of Veliky Novgorod , crosses the city in a south-westerly direction, bypasses the Ilmen Lake on the west side and follows its tributary Schelon on the left bank up to the small town Porchow, which is already in the Pskov Oblast . There it turns to the west and finally reaches the federal trunk road R23 a few kilometers northeast of the oblast capital Pskov .

The road is paved along its entire length and has two lanes.

Until the numbering of Russian highways was reorganized in 2010, the Novgorod - Porchow section was numbered A116. The A116 continued from Porchow via Ostrow and past the Pytalowo to the border to Latvia (from there as A13 towards Rēzekne  - Daugavpils  - Lithuanian border). This part of the former A116 today bears the number 58A-309 as the regional road from Pskov Oblast to Ostrow, then number 58K-306.
