Red Dawn is an American dystopian action movie of Dan Bradley from the year 2012 and a remake of the 1984 film released Red Dawn . The film is about a group of young people who have to defend their homeland from a North Korean invasion .

action

The film begins with an introductory monologue that shows the consequences of the economic crisis in the European Union , the weakening of NATO , the increasing cooperation between the militaristic North Korea and Russia and the stationing of US troops abroad .

The Marine Jed Eckert is on home leave in his hometown of Spokane , Washington state . There he meets his father, police officer Tom Eckert, and his brother, football player Matt Eckert, again and realizes that their relationship is still tense. Matt can't forgive his brother for joining the US Marines after his mother's death, leaving him so alone. Jed is about to return home when his brother loses an important football game . Nevertheless, Matt and his brother go to a bar in the evening. But a mysterious power cut ends their evening. The next morning, Jed and Matt are awakened by the tremors to see North Korean paratroopers and transport planes fly in over their city. The North Koreans take the entire city. Their father tells them to flee to their hunting lodge in the woods while he helps the townspeople. Matt and Jed escape the troops along with Robert Kitner, Daryl Jenkins and Pete. Toni Walsh, Danny Jackson, Julie Goodyear and Greg Goodyear also join them. With a heavy heart, Matt has to leave his girlfriend Erica behind, as she was taken prisoner by soldiers. Tensions quickly develop in the hunting lodge, as the group learns that Pete has betrayed them to the North Korean soldiers led by Captain Cho. Cho lets the hut burn down and calls on the friends to surrender. When the team does not surrender, Cho shoots Tom Eckert because he encourages his children to oppose these men.

The friends take refuge in the woods and Jed announces to the others that he wants to fight the soldiers. The others join him and Jed trains them to be warriors. They then steal weapons, set up a base in an abandoned mine and begin a series of bombing raids against soldiers and collaborators under the name "Wolverines". They learn that the North Koreans are getting support from Russia. During an attack by the Wolverines on the soldiers, Matt sees his girlfriend drive past him on a bus. He can free her, but is attacked. Greg sees this and tries to help Matt, but is shot dead by the soldiers. Cho is not enthusiastic about the Wolverines attacks and takes revenge by burning down the forests surrounding the city, thereby destroying the Wolverines base. It also kills Danny and Julie. The Wolverines eventually encounter a squad of Marines, Sergeant Major Andrew Tanner and two other Marines, Smith and Hodges, searching for the Wolverines. They reveal to them that the Russians are supporting the North Korean invasion with an EMP weapon. In addition, the North Koreans have an undisturbed radio whose radio cannot be deciphered. The group decides to get to the device. There is a battle with the soldiers in the city police station, in which Hodges is killed, but the Wolverines manage to get the device. Jed shoots Captain Cho with his father's gun.

Back at the new base, Toni takes care of Daryl, who sustained a stab wound during a fight. Matt forgives his brother and asks him to finally confess his love to Toni. Just as he is about to do this, the base is stormed by the soldiers. Jed is killed in the process. The Wolverines can barely escape, but are visibly shocked because they do not understand how the soldiers found them. The next day, Robert realizes that Daryl was equipped with a tracking device when he was stabbed. After some discussion, Daryl decides that he won't go any further with them and will stay behind in the woods to save the Wolverines' lives. Sergeant Major Tanner and Smith take the box to Washington. The Wolverines choose to stay and keep fighting. Matt becomes the new leader of the Wolverines and can persuade other people to fight the soldiers.

In May 2008, MGM's Harry Sloan and Mary Parent announced at the Festival de Cannes that a remake of The Red Tide was in the early stages of preproduction. MGM also announced that it is considering the events of September 11, 2001 as the world has changed in terms of threats. In July 2008, Dan Bradley was confirmed as director and Carl Ellsworth, screenwriter for Red Eye and Disturbia , was confirmed as screenwriter. In June 2009, the lead role was given to Australians Chris Hemsworth , Josh Peck and Adrianne Palicki . Josh Hutcherson and Isabel Lucas , as well as Connor Cruise , the son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman , got other central roles .

Filming began in Mount Clemens , Michigan in September 2009 . In June 2010, MGM Studios announced that the film was being postponed because the company was experiencing financial problems. The delay came at the same time as the first reviews of the film, as Global Times magazine , one of the leading Chinese state newspapers, criticized the filmmakers for invading their film from the Chinese.

In January 2011 the first cast photo was released along with the news that the film had to be postponed again. In March 2012, MGM announced that the enemy army was not originally from China, but from North Korea. The producers feared a backlash from China and therefore had all Chinese symbols on the military equipment digitally painted over. These changes cost another $ 1 million and postponed the theatrical release for another year.

Reviews

On the Rotten Tomatoes page , only 13% of 141 reviews were considered positive. 51% of the audience voted for the film.

“Anyone who wants to treat themselves to a wonderfully senseless evening in the cinema with a lot of popcorn and a few beers with their buddies has a good chance of feeling entertained. Of course, this is solely due to the fact that 'Red Dawn' is so bad that it is almost good again. "

"The whole thing is so stupid in every way that it hurts, and to make matters worse, it is staged completely tension-free."

- DerStandard.at

“RED DAWN has to deal with the same allegations as its predecessor. Despite the more or less realistic action scenes, the film doesn't seem credible in any way. Patriotism and unjustified arrogance don't belong on the screen these days. It is all the more sad that young actors like Chris Hemsworth or Josh Hutcherson stand in front of the camera for this type of film. "

- Kino7.de

“Directing debutant Dan Bradley has only worked as a stunt coordinator and second unit director, so his ambition here is limited to making explosions as effective as possible. The genre-related patriotic speeches are greatly shortened, the motivation is more family-like when a group of young people takes to the field as guerrilla fighters against the invaders. "

- epd-Film.de

"A simple thief film, which undercuts the sub-complex scenario of the original and also conveys chauvinist-racist and anti-democratic ideas."
