Ronalds Ķēniņš (born February 28, 1991 in Riga ) is a Latvian ice hockey player who has played for Lausanne HC from the National League since May 2018 . Since he has a Swiss player license, he does not fall under the quota of foreigners in the National League.

Career

Ronalds Ķēniņš began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of HK Liepājas Metalurgs , in which he was active until 2007. He then spent a year with the U17 juniors of the EHC Oberthurgau from Switzerland. From 2008 to 2011, the winger played for the GCK Lions in the National League B , while at the same time he played for the club's U20 juniors in the top Swiss U20 junior division. In the 2011/12 season Kenins made his debut for the ZSC Lions in the National League A . With his team he won the Swiss championship title straight away .

In July 2013, Ķēniņš signed a two-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks for the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons. In his first year of contract, the Canucks loaned him to the ZSC Lions, with whom he again became Swiss champions in 2014. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season he was active for the Utica Comets , the Canucks farm team , in the American Hockey League . He was first called to the NHL squad in January 2015 and made his debut for the Canucks in the National Hockey League on January 30, 2015 .

He left the North American ice rinks after two years of play. On August 17, 2016, the ZSC Lions announced his return and he signed a two-year contract. In 2018 he won the Swiss championship again with the ZSC Lions and was one of the top performers, especially in the play-offs of the championship season. He had already signed a three-year contract with Lausanne HC in autumn 2017 , which was valid from the 2018/19 season and in which he will earn 1.8 million Swiss francs .

International

For Latvia , Ķēniņš took part in the junior division of the U18 Junior World Championships in Division I in 2008 and 2009, as well as the U20 Junior World Championship in 2010 and the U20 Junior World Championship in Division I in 2011 . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 2011 and 2012 World Championships .
