On the way to the blue Emscher , the name of theme route 13 is the route of industrial culture .

The Emscher is the mother of all Köttel basins , as the canalized streams and rivers of the Ruhr area are popularly known . The battered river was straightened so that untreated sewage from mining , industry and municipalities could be quickly transported into the Rhine . Due to the subsidence of the mountains , a large number of tributaries have to be pumped up into the Emscher forever. The Emschergenossenschaft is trying to restore the river to its natural state - as far as possible - as part of the project to rebuild the Emscher system . The themed route highlights these efforts. The following is a description of the sights to be visited here.
