About this picture

Schönwald ( Lower Sorbian Běły Gózd ) is a municipality in the Dahme-Spreewald district in Brandenburg . It is administered by the Unterspreewald Office.

Community structure

The community consists of the districts Schönwalde and Waldow / Brand as well as the residential areas extension, forestry Schönwalde and forester's house Schenze.

history

Schönwalde and Waldow / Brand belonged to the district of Lübben (Spreewald) in the province of Brandenburg since 1816 and to the district of Lübben in the GDR district of Cottbus from 1952 . Since 1993, the places have been in the Dahme-Spreewald district of Brandenburg.

Schönwald was created on December 31, 2001 from the voluntary amalgamation of the previously independent municipalities of Schönwalde ( Běły Gózd in Lower Sorbian ) and Waldow / Brand. Schönwald was the seat of the Unterspreewald office from 1992–2012 , which it lost to Golßen when the office was re-established .

The first documentary mention of Schönwald comes from January 20, 1345 in a Luckau document. The town's church was built in 1696. In 1817 smallpox broke out, and in 1888 a major fire raged. The Schönwalde volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1911. It was connected to the power grid eleven years later.
