Garsten is a market town with 6640 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Upper Austria in the Steyr-Land district . The place is best known for the former Garsten Abbey , which is now the Garsten prison .
geography
Garsten is 298 m above sea level in the Traunviertel on the edge of the Eisenstadt Steyr . The extension of the market town is from north to south and 10.7 km from west to east. 39% of the municipal area is forested, 51.4% is used for agriculture.

history
Garsten is mentioned for the first time in the records of the Synod of Mistelbach in 985. In 1082 the monastery was founded as a collegiate monastery by Ottokar I , a Traungauer . Under his son Ottokar II , Benedictines from the Göttweig monastery were appointed in 1107 with the famous first abbot and Saint Berthold von Garsten . This was decisive for the further political and cultural development.
Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria , the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century . Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .
During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times. Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria.
After Austria was annexed to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau and was incorporated into Steyr on July 10, 1938.
After 1945 , Upper Austria was restored. 1958 the community was raised to the market . Population development: In 1991 the municipality had 6,071 inhabitants according to the census , in 2001 it had 6,506 inhabitants.
Culture and sights
- Garsten Parish Church : Collegiate church of the former Garsten Benedictine Abbey; Begun in 1677 under the Italian master builder Pietro Francesco Carlone , completed by his sons Carlo Antonio Carlone and Giovanni Battista Carlone . Baroque design u. a. by Kremser Schmidt .
- Garsten Abbey : Former Benedictine Abbey: an abandoned Baroque abbey. The builder was Pietro Francesco Carlone, completed by Jakob Prandtauer after his death . Today the monastery serves as a prison.
Economy and Infrastructure
Garsten is the seat of the broadcaster RTV Regionalfernsehen Oberösterreich .

Garsten station is on a section of the Rudolfsbahn .
From 1889 to 1982 Garsten was the starting point of the narrow-gauge Steyrtalbahn , which has been running on a daily basis since 1985 as a museum train, but only from Steyr Lokalbahn station (route km 2.7) and only to Grünburg .

Mayor is Anton Silber from the ÖVP. His predecessor Franz Steininger (ÖVP) resigned from office in November 2008 after 25 years.
