German sailing league
The German Sailing League is a nationwide club competition in German sailing that was introduced in April 2013. The first competition event took place from June 7th to 9th, 2013 at the German Touring Yacht Club in Tutzing on Lake Starnberg . Conceptwerft Holding GmbH is the initiator of the innovative Segelliga format.
history
2013 season
As in other sports, the best sailing clubs in Germany should compete against each other over the course of one season in the form of regattas , which are evaluated in a table. The Bundesliga comprises 18 clubs that make up a squad of 20 athletes at the most, from which the participating team is selected for the respective competition.
Here are various competition formats such as fleet race and match race with one design - keelboats sailed. In 2013 J / 70 was only sailed.
2014 season
After the success of the first season, 58 other German sailing clubs submitted their registration for participation in the sailing Bundesliga 2014, so that a 2nd Bundesliga was introduced. The clubs in the last five places in the pre-season table of the first division had to fight for participation or to remain in the first division in a relegation event from April 4 to 6, 2014 on the Flensburg Fjord near Glücksburg with the 58 newly registered clubs . The five best teams qualified for the 1st Bundesliga, the next 18 clubs made up the 2nd Bundesliga, and the rest were ignored. Unqualified clubs can apply again in the following year.
The draw for the relegation event took place on February 28, 2014. The dates and venues for the Bundesliga competitions were also set. 6 regattas were held in the 1st Bundesliga: May 16-18, 2014 (Starnberg / Starnberger See), July 19-21, 2014 (Travemünde / Bay of Lübeck), August 22-24, 2014 (Berlin / Wannsee) , September 5 to 7, 2014 (Kiel / Innenförde) and September 26 to 28, 2014 (Friedrichshafen / Bodensee). The 2nd league comprised three events, whereby the relegation in front of Glücksburg was included in the evaluation: April 4 to 6, 2014 (Glücksburg / Flensburger Förde), May 23 to 25, 2014 (Tutzing / Starnberger See) and May 26 to 28 September 2014 (Friedrichshafen / Bodensee). In 2014 J / 70 and B / One were sailed.
At the turn of the year 2013/14, AUDI AG decided to support this series of events based on the partnership with Audi Sailing Team Germany and the Kieler Woche. Further partners were clothing partner Marinepool, sailmaker North Sails and importer Mittelmann's Werft.
2015 season
The 2015 season started with changes. The point system for both leagues was converted to the low-point system used in sailing.
There were a total of seven first division events in which the second division was integrated five times. In addition, in autumn 2015 there was a qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga and a relegation for the 1st Bundesliga.
Dates of the 1st and 2nd sailing league were: May 1st to 3rd (Tutzing / Starnberger See), July 4th to 6th (Warnemünde, as part of the Warnemünde Week), July 18th to 20th (Travemünde, as part of the Travemünder Woche), August 21-23 (Berlin / Wannsee) and September 25-27 (Überlingen / Lake Constance). Further dates of the only 1st sailing Bundesliga: June 5th to 7th (Kiel / Innenförde) and the final from October 29th to 31st (Hamburg / Outer Alster).
The qualification of the 2nd sailing Bundesliga took place from October 9th to 11th in Glücksburg on the Flensburg Fjord and the relegation of the 1st sailing Bundesliga on November 1st in Hamburg on the Outer Alster.
Compared to 2014, the clubs sailed more regattas, but the total number of league events was reduced due to the parallel alignment of the first and second leagues and the integration of the relegation into the final weekend.
After the contract extension with premium partner Audi, Vattenfall and BAY also supported the German Sailing League as an event partner. Mittelmann's Werft, Bavaria, Marinepool and North Sails were also present as partners.
2016 season
In the 2016 season, the Deutsche Segel-Bundesliga GmbH introduced some changes to the sponsors. So changed z. B. the partner for sailing equipment from North Sails Germany to OneSails Germany.
Some changes also took place in the rules and regulations and the regatta. In 2016, the unit boats of the type J / 70 were also sailed in the 2nd division. The fleet of 13 boats in total (6 per league plus 1 reserve) was provided and looked after by Mittelmanns Werft.
With the introduction of a final system based on the medal race from Olympic sailing, separate final events were introduced to supplement the previous evaluation mode. Small changes to the crew nomination as well as an addition to the penal regulations (yellow flags) have also been implemented.
The season opener was the relegation 2015, which was canceled due to too little wind in the previous year. Then a total of seven events were sailed for the 1st sailing Bundesliga and five events for the 2nd sailing Bundesliga:
1./2. Bundesliga - Relegation: April 27-28, 2016 in Starnberg, Starnberger See
1./2. Bundesliga: April 29 to May 1, 2016 in Starnberg, Starnberger See
1./2. Bundesliga: May 27-29, 2016 in Konstanz, Lake Constance
1./2. Bundesliga: July 23 to 25, 2016 in Travemünde, Baltic Sea
1./2. Bundesliga: August 19-21, 2016 in Berlin, Wannsee
1./2. Bundesliga: September 16 to 18, 2016 in Kiel, Baltic Sea
2nd Bundesliga qualification: October 7th to 9th in Glücksburg, Baltic Sea
1. Bundesliga: October 27-29, 2016 final in Hamburg, Outer Alster
1./2. Bundesliga - Relegation: October 30th to 31st, 2016 in Hamburg, Outer Alster
The final races, which were held for the first time this year, took place for the first division in Hamburg and for the second division in Kiel. There were also final races during the qualification for the 2nd sailing Bundesliga, which took place in Glücksburg. In addition to Audi, partners in 2016 were also SAP, BAY, One Sails, Mittelmann's Werft and Marinepool. In addition, the German Junior Sailing League took place for the first time in 2016 .
2017 season
For the 2017 season, the DSBL concept was expanded to include the four regional leagues North, East, South and West, and a " German Sailing League Cup " (DSL Cup) was created in which clubs from all leagues up to the junior league compete against each other.
With the introduction of regional leagues and the DSL Cup, the concept of promotion and relegation from and to the 2nd league was adapted. So now the first place in each regional league in the previous year as well as the two best placed clubs in the DSL Cup that have not yet sailed in the 1st or 2nd league qualified for the 2nd league; conversely, the clubs in positions 13-18 at the end of the season were relegated to the corresponding regional leagues. The events of the regional leagues should either be organized as individual events or - in order to keep the effort low - as part of J / 70 class regattas. The events of the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga were: April 28th to 30th (Prien / Chiemsee), May 25th to 27th (Lindau / Bodensee), July 21st to 23rd (Travemünde / Baltic Sea) and July 18th to August 20 (Glücksburg / Baltic Sea). The 1st Bundesliga also sailed from June 17th to 19th (Kiel / Baltic Sea) and from November 2nd to 4th (Berlin / Wannsee), the 2nd Bundesliga from July 1st to 3rd (Warnemünde / Baltic Sea). The qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga took place from October 13th to 15th in Glücksburg on the Baltic Sea. Sponsors in 2017 were Audi, SAP, Bay, Budweiser, Mittelmann, North Sails and Marinepool.
2018 season
In the 2018 season, the qualification for the 2nd division was rearranged and the cup regatta, which was held for the first time in 2017, was retained. Unlike in 2017, the 2018 qualification no longer took place across the regions, but via a major national class event within the Kiel Week. A club had to occupy one of the first twelve places in order to be admitted to the qualification. The field of cup participants was composed as follows:
- Best 3 sailing clubs from the 1st Bundesliga
- Best 3 sailing clubs from the 2nd Bundesliga
- Best 3 sailing clubs from the junior league
- Twelve qualifiers from the qualification event
- Three relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga
The first three teams in the DSL Cup that were not among the 6 first and second division teams eligible to start also qualified for the 2nd Bundesliga 2019.
Founding and founding members
Oliver Schwall and Arne Dost, who developed the idea of the sailing league a few years ago with their company Konzeptwerft GmbH, looked for cooperation with the clubs from the very beginning. On April 7, 2013, the German Sailing League was officially launched by a total of 17 founding clubs in Hamburg. These founding associations joined together as DSL e. V. and commissioned the concept shipyard with the search for sponsors and their newly founded subsidiary DSBL GmbH with the implementation of the German sailing league.
Despite the successful, professional implementation and organization based on sponsorship money, the German Sailing League continues to rely mainly on hundreds of volunteer supporters from the respective organizing clubs.
Today the DSL e. V. the association of all 36 clubs that have qualified for the 1st and 2nd sailing league. He and his board of directors provide three representatives of the five-person league committee, in which the central decisions for the design and implementation of the 1st and 2nd sailing league are made. The DSL e. V. is therefore the central control element. The other two members of the league committee are Oliver Schwall from DSBL GmbH and Jobst Richter from the German Sailing Association.
The following 17 German sailing clubs founded the German Sailing League in April 2013 :
- Bavarian Yacht Club (BYC), Starnberg

Ascents and descents
As in other sports leagues, the German Sailing League offers direct and indirect promotion and relegation opportunities. In the first division, the last four clubs have been relegated since 2017; In return, the clubs move up to places one to four in the second division.
Between 2015 and 2016, the rule was that the last three clubs in the first division were relegated directly, while the first three clubs in the second division were promoted directly. The clubs in positions 13, 14 and 15 in the first division and in positions 4, 5 and 6 in the second division qualified for a one-day relegation regatta in the format usual in the other sailing Bundesliga regattas, i.e. in races with six Class J / 70 ships, took place, in which the clubs qualified in the first three places for the first division of the next season and which sailed in the last three places in the second division of the next season.
All clubs except the first four (promotion) and the last six (possibility of relegation) of the second division, according to the regulation since 2017, will certainly remain in their league for the next season. In the second league, all four of the top four of the regional leagues move up; In addition, two other clubs in the DSL Cup - the best two that would not be safely in the first or second division in the coming season - can qualify for the start in the second division, possibly even those among the last six Second division places that year were.
Until 2017, clubs that were among the last six places in the second division were allowed to fight for the first six places in a multi-day qualifying regatta with other clubs in the mid double-digit number that were not part of the first or second division at the time entitle to (if necessary again) start in the second division. The qualification regattas took place off Glücksburg (Baltic Sea) on the Flensburg Fjord from 2014 to 2016 and were organized by the German High Seas Sports Association HANSA (DHH) and the Flensburg Sailing Club (FSC).
In addition, the first four places (up to and including 2016: the first three places) in the First League entitle them to participate in the Sailing Champions League .

Legend: Within the table cells, the clubs are sorted according to their current performance at the relevant point in time, that is: In the cell "Promotion to the 1st division" / "2016" used here as an example, the first three clubs are the three in the overall table 2015 the second division leading. All other clubs are sorted by place in the relegation regatta and in 2015 also sailed in the second division.
Remarks:
- “Year” here means the year in which the club changed its league classification, that is: If a club is listed in the line “2016” and in the column “Relegation to the 2nd division”, it is Sailed in the first division in 2015 and in the second division in 2016.
- “Relegation from the second division” means a relegation from the first division in 2014 without qualification for the second division.
- The Lindauer SC did not take part in the qualification regatta.
- The headquarters of the SVGM is unclear. On the website of the association, reference is made to the sports boat harbor in Gelting-Mole, and accordingly the home port was specified here as the association's headquarters / location. The address (es) of the person responsible under press law is / are given on the page, but not that of the association.
- After the season position 16 at the end of the 2016 season and the associated direct relegation to the second division, the Kiel YC declared his retirement as a participant in the sailing Bundesliga. He justified this in a press release with the high costs of league sailing, which would have to be borne at the expense of other club branches. After the withdrawal, the association could therefore focus again on youth work in particular. However, the KYC will continue to host the DSBL's “game days”. To compensate in the second league, in which the Kiel YC would have relegated, SV Stade also qualified with seventh place in the qualifying regatta.
- The designation [N] , [O] , [S] or [W] identifies the qualification for the promoters in the second division from 2018 onwards by first place in the regional league north , east , south or west .
German Sailing League Cup
The German Sailing League Cup, or DSL Cup for short , was launched in 2017 as a parallel event to the leagues and as a qualification for the second division and was held in front of Glücksburg on the Flensburg Fjord . 54 clubs from all DSBL leagues qualify for the DSL Cup: the two best clubs in the first and second leagues, plus places 13-18 from the latter, as well as the first-placed clubs in the junior regional leagues and the top ten in the regional leagues .

German Junior Sailing League
The idea of the Junior Sailing League is simple and is based on its big brother, the German Sailing League. It is the league for the club's youngsters and offers an attractive and alternative perspective for talented regatta sailors. The years 2016 and 2017 showed that the DJSL is not a competition for pre-Olympic sailing. Rather, many young people could be won back via the format for regatta sport or another, additional and important motivation could be created. The organizers and organizers are the clubs involved in the respective regattas. The patronage is the DSL e. V., who also takes care of the necessary know-how transfer.
