Sehnsucht is the second studio album by the new German hardship band Rammstein . It was published on August 22, 1997. In addition to six different covers (which can be selected using a specially folded booklet), the 2001 re-release included both German and partly English texts.
Recordings
Rammstein began recording Sehnsucht in autumn 1996. Again Jacob Hellner acted as producer, and Ronald Prent was at his side again as mixer.
illustration
Since Rammstein had to take harsh criticism for the cover of their first album, this time they wanted to deal more with the front. They hired the Austrian Gottfried Helnwein , who works as a photographer and painter, for the photos . He made up all six members of the group and provided them with individual wire frames. These wire frames are original medical instruments that the surgeon Ferdinand Sauerbruch used. The forks that Till Lindemann has in mind are exactly the same that Helnwein used to design the cover of the Scorpions LP “Blackout”. The portrait photos were laid out in such a way that every band member could be seen on the cover. At the back is a white beach with palm trees and blue skies.

Information about the songs
nostalgia
Especially in English-speaking fans of this song has desire led to confusion, as some believed, Lindemann singing "Chainsaw" ( Engl . For chainsaw ) instead of "Sehnsucht". The song was already known under the name "Africa" in 1996, only there were a few small differences in text and rhythm in the chorus.
Angel
The video for this song was inspired by the movie From Dusk Till Dawn .
animal
The melody for the song Tier does not come from Rammstein, but from the band Die Krupps , who wrote them for their song The Dawning of Doom . That is why Jürgen Engler is named as the composer in the credits of Live from Berlin . In the text, a father lives out his sexual urges on his daughter. When she later grows up, she takes revenge for her rape by killing him and depicting the murder as suicide.
Punish me
In Punish me it's either a punishment by God, or the domination of God over man, or sadomasochistic practices. In the video, which is on the DVD Live from Berlin , Till Lindemann whips himself with a leather whip .
You have
The title you have is a play on the second person singular word of have and hate. In terms of content, it is about a marriage proposal in which the lyrical self is initially undecided whether to accept it, but ultimately decides against it, which becomes clear in the chorus: “Do you want to be faithful to you for all days until death does part? - No! ".
Bend over
"Bück dich" is the only live video that was censored from the DVD Live from Berlin , as Till Lindemann and Christian Lorenz imitate anal intercourse on stage . Lindemann leads Lorenz onto the stage on a dog leash and carries a dummy penis that is connected to a tube and squirts a sperm-like liquid. For this performance, Lindemann and Lorenz were arrested at a concert in Worcester (Massachusetts) in the USA and sentenced to six months probation and a $ 100 fine.
play with me
The song Spiel mit mir is about the sexual abuse of a boy by his older brother. Since the older of the two cannot fall asleep, he asks his brother to please him.
piano
The song Piano is about a murder that was committed out of love or that was committed because the female person cheated on the male with another person. He confronted her and then killed her.
Quote: "She said to me: 'I will always stay with you.' But it only appeared that she was playing for me alone. I poured her blood into the fire of my anger. […] There at the piano she listened to me and when my playing started she held her breath. “The melody of this song is very similar to that of the song Seemann from the album Herzeleid .
old man
The text of the song Old Man is inspired by a painting. This is also the only song in which drummer Christoph Schneider contributed lyrically.
jealousy
This song is about what a person should do to the lyric self in order to reduce their jealousy. Quote: “If I am braver, kill myself and eat my heart. If I have your wife, kill me and eat me whole. "
Kiss me (fur frog)
The song Kiss Me is about the oral desire of a female sex organ. It has never been performed live.
