The 1986/87 season was the 53rd season of Serie A1 , the highest Italian ice hockey division . AS Varese Hockey became champions for the first time in the club's history . The HC Auronzo rose to the second division.

mode

In the main round, each of the ten teams played a total of 18 games. The league was then divided into two groups with six and four teams in the second phase of the season. According to their main round placement, the teams received bonus points for the second phase of the season. In the second phase of the season, the teams played back and forth against each group opponent. All six teams in Group A and the two best-placed teams in Group B qualified for the playoffs in which the championship title was played. The last placed in Group B rose directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
