action
season 1
Eighteen-year-old Clary Fray goes to a club with her best friend Simon Lewis and his bandmate Maureen on her birthday and meets three teenagers with strange tattoos and strange weapons. Since she is the only one who can see the three of them, she runs after them, witnessing a massacre that only appears to see them again. Her mother is then kidnapped, who owns a magical goblet, the most important object of the so-called underworld, into which Clary has now got into and in which werewolves, vampires and elves are no longer horror tales. The three shadowhunters Jace Wayland, Alec Lightwood and Isabelle Lightwood, whose parents are the directors of the New York Institute, show Clary Fray the dark parallel world, which she cannot remember, as her memories protect the girl and the angel from the warlock Magnus Bane have been deleted. Jace Wayland teaches her to survive in his world, whereby the two develop feelings for each other. This creates a competition between Simon and Jace for the beautiful Shadowhunterin, with the good-natured Simon clearly drawing the short straw. Alec has strong dislikes for Clary Fray as he has strong feelings for Jace Wayland in addition to his mutually empowering Parabatai bond. Jace Wayland is always behind Clary Fray, who tries in every possible way to protect her Shadowhunter mother Jocelyn Fray from Valentine, her father, and to free her. The battle for the chalice has begun, which puts Clary in great danger as she is the key to the endless power of the chalice, but her memories are gone. In the course of the season, Alec's and Isabelle's parents are deprived of the institute's management by Lydia Branwell, as there are often violations of the law when the young shadowhunters go in search of the goblet on their own. Furthermore, the talented sorcerer Magnus Bane makes Alec beautiful eyes and Clary's decision turns Simon into a vampire and thus has to give up his previous life. Things come to a head towards the end when Valentine reveals to Clary and Jace that they are siblings, which puts their relationship in an uncomfortable position.
season 2
There's a lot of excitement at the institute after Jace disappears with Valentine, whose circle is growing stronger. In the meantime, Clary's mother Jocelyn has awakened. Raphael is still looking for Camille, who was freed by Clary and her allies. Meanwhile, Alec tries to find Jace with his parabolic powers and sinks his soul into an intermediate world, only Jace can bring him back now. Jace is meanwhile wanted by the council for treason. Jace has a choice, will he save Alec or flee the council? Magnus uses his powers to keep Alec's soul in the intermediate world until Jace shows up. Alec is saved by Jace, who is arrested by the council immediately afterwards and sent to the City of Bones. As the Shadowhunters and Fiends find their way into a new world, unusual alliances are formed. After an attack on the institute that resulted in numerous losses, a rift widened between the two groups. The team around Clary and Jace is right in the middle of it all.
production
background
After the movie Chronicles of the Underworld - City of Bones was released in the cinemas in summer 2013 and the box office income did not meet expectations, Constantin Film decided in October 2014 to re-produce the series as a television series. In March 2015 it was announced that the series of novels by Freeform (then still ABC Family ) would be adapted as a television series under the title Shadowhunters . As a director for the first episode, McG was hired. Showrunner and executive producer was Ed Decter. Following the announcement of the series, Tom Ascheim, ABC Family chairman, said: “'Shadowhunters' is a big, epic saga that will delight those ABC Family viewers who like franchises like ' Harry Potter ', ' Hunger Games ' and like ' Twilight '. ”Filming for the first season began on May 28, 2015 in Toronto .
In March 2016, Freeform extended the series for a second season, which started on January 2, 2017 in the USA. At the beginning of production of the second season, showrunner Ed Decter unexpectedly left the series due to creative differences and was replaced a week later by Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer . In April 2017, Freeform ordered a third season of the series, which has aired since March 20, 2018. In June 2018, the end of the series after the third season was announced. However, the 2nd part of the 3rd season will be broadcast in 2019, as well as two more episodes with which the series should end. Previously, the fan community started an action to save the series under the hashtag #SaveShadowhunters or #PickUpShadowhunters. For example, a plane with a banner was already flying over the Netflix studio under this hashtag and there was an advertising board in Time Square. However, the action had no effect on the production of another season.

In April 2015, Dominic Sherwood was cast as the first leading actor in the series for the role of Jace Wayland . On May 1, 2015, Variety reported that the newcomers Alberto Rosende and Emeraude Toubia were cast. You take on the roles of Simon Lewis and Isabelle Lightwood .
