history

The name Sunday goes back to Latin dominicus (belonging, rule) and either testifies to the different ownership relationships between the free Walsers (Vallenses vallis or colonis) and the native Romans (incolae) or stood for this dominicus (day of the Lord) and was from literally translated to the Walsers who arrived in the 14th century.

The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria ( Freiburg im Breisgau ). In 1457 at the latest, a parish was established in Sonntag. From 1710 there was an independent parish in Buchboden. From 1805 the place belonged to Bavaria. In 1806 it became an independent municipality. In 1814 he came back to Austria. Sonntag has been part of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg since it was founded in 1861. The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955 .

Due to its hillside location, the place is repeatedly threatened by avalanches . There was severe damage in 1526, 1689, 1731, 1806 and 1954.

Population development

In 2018, the proportion of non-Austrian citizens was 6.1 percent.

The migration balance has been negative since 1981 , but was offset by the strongly positive birth balance by 1991 . Since 1991 emigration has increased and the birth rate has fallen, leading to a decline in the population.

Municipal coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms was created in 1967 based on a design by the Schruns artist and heraldist Konrad Honold . It shows in a blue shield on a silver, red-bridled horse that bursts to the left, a rider with silver robes, gold armor and golden halo, who is holding a silver sword in his right hand and a black shield in front of his chest, covered with a silver one rising to the right Capricorn holds. The ibex shown on the shield reminds of the settlement by the Walser (symbol of the free Walser from 1408).

politics

The community council consists of 12 members. In the municipal council and mayoral elections in Vorarlberg 2015 , the “Sunday List” was a unified list that subsequently provided all 12 members of the municipal council.
