Sankt Georgen am Kreischberg has been a municipality in the Murau district in Styria since the beginning of 2015 . It emerged as part of the municipal structural reform in Styria from the formerly independent municipalities of Sankt Georgen ob Murau and Sankt Ruprecht-Falkendorf . After the announcement of the merger, which took place in November 2013, the new municipality would have continued the name "Sankt Georgen ob Murau". This was corrected by a change in April 2014.

• Passion Play St. Georgen am Kreischberg: As early as the 1920s and 1930s found in St. Georgen ob Murau Passion play instead. In 1998 this tradition was continued, and since then the Last Passion of Jesus Christ has been performed regularly. The historical piece has been revised to reflect the times. Numerous contributors work on the implementation in advance and behind the scenes. Music, sets, costumes, etc. were created by local artists. As is tradition, the roles are played by local amateur actors. Around 200 people are deployed for this at a time. The special theatrical form of the Passion Play or the sacred drama goes back to the Middle Ages and is still cultivated in parts of Catholic regions today. The St. Georgen am Kreischberg Passion Play (formerly St. Georgen ob Murau Passion Play) is now part of Europassion, the association of European Passion Play locations. This network includes over 90 syndicates from 16 European countries. The aim is to promote friendly relationships between the individual Passion Play venues and to promote and maintain the individual character of the individual games. The next Passion Play will be performed in 2017, for which a modernization and revision of the staging have been announced.

• Every two years the Murau carnival race takes place in St. Georgen am Kreischberg on Rose Monday , which is a tradition in many villages in the district. Several groups are out and about in town. At dawn, the entourage sets out, accompanied by drummers. At the top is the "Wegauskehrer", which symbolically should clear the way. Only the strongest men can take on this role because anyone can stand in his way. If the road sweeper is defeated in battle, the carnival race is over. Then different characters follow, such as B. the "Heagreifer" (chicken claw) in feather robe, which steals chickens and eggs on the farms and sells them again. The "Schellfaschinge" wear short lederhosen with long white underpants underneath, a white shirt and a ring of bells around their waist and a colorful pointed cap on their heads. You walk in front of each house a "Kranzl" (in a circle). They, the so-called “beauties”, are followed by the group of “Vetteln”, ie characters who offer their services for money or beg: doctor, scissor grinder, cheap Jakob (peddler), horse dealer with horse, bridal couple, single mother with child and beggars . After a long and exhausting day the groups meet in the village. In the evening there is a lively party at the “Schinderhochzeit” (masked ball). The implementing organizations are the volunteer fire brigade and the local music association. The carnival race is part of the intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO .

Due to the amalgamation of the municipalities, the coats of arms of the merged municipalities lost their official validity on January 1st, 2015. The new community coat of arms of the predecessor community Sankt Georgen ob Murau was awarded to the new community with effect from February 10, 2015.
The blazon (coat of arms description) reads:

"Growing in a red shield and looking forward, the armored and nimbly sainted St. George, with his right hand pushing a silver lance through the jaws of the red, flame-spraying, winged, silver-toothed and horned dragon head growing out of the lower edge of the shield in front of him."
