The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Michael is located in Seeshaupt in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau . The parish of St. Michael is part of the Benediktbeuern deanery .

history

From around 1346 there was a Romanesque choir tower church in Seeshaupt , the nave of which was today's Anna chapel . The lower part of the tower with the choir arch probably even dates from the 12th century. A ribbed vault was erected there in the early 14th century . In 1352 the church was sold by Count Walram von Seefeld to the Augustinian Canons of Polling , which in turn sold it to the Canons of Bernried in 1479 . After the church was raised from there to a parish church , a new Gothic building was to be built. The old nave was not demolished, but integrated as a side chapel into the three bays long new nave. This church was consecrated on August 22nd, 1487. Around 1670 to 1680, an octagonal upper floor and an onion dome were added to the tower in the Baroque era , the pointed arch windows were replaced by arched windows and the rib vault was replaced by stucco . This work was probably carried out by Caspar Feichtmayr from Wessobrunn . Around 1708 the late Gothic reticulated vault in the Anna chapel was replaced by stucco.

During the great village fire on March 31, 1815, in which 29 Seeshaupter properties were destroyed, the church tower burned down and the bells melted. The rest of the building remained without major damage, which is why only the church roof and the tower had to be replaced. They were adapted to the taste of classicism with a flatter roof and a pointed helmet on the tower. From 1870, the baroque furnishings of the church were replaced by pastor Johann Baptist Held with new works of art in the style of the Neo-Renaissance and the Nazarenes .

From 1909 to 1911 the church was built according to plans by the architects Josef Eisner sen. and Josef Eisner jun. expanded. The yoke of the nave protruding beyond the Anna chapel was broken off and a four bay long new nave with pilasters and a barrel vault made of iron and rabitz was added to the west . The former nave was initially thought to be a place for children and has been used as a choir room since the liturgical reform . In addition to the expansion, the furnishings were also standardized in the Baroque style. Furthermore, the tower was raised by one story and its pointed helmet was replaced by a curved onion dome. It was partly financed by a donation from the industrialist Heinrich von dall'Armi .

In World War II, all the bells were melted down. In July 1950 the parish church finally received a new four-part bell. The bells Johannes Nepomuk , Michael and Maria are consecrated , plus the death knell .

Description and equipment

High altar

High altar

The neo-baroque high altar, consecrated to Archangel Michael , was built according to a design by Josef Eisner and donated in 1910 by Heinrich Ritter von dall'Armi and his wife Antonia. In the center is a depiction of Christ the King , to the left of which the Archangel Michael threatens sinners with punishment with a flaming sword. The intercession of Mary comes to the aid of sinners , whereupon Christ puts a stop to Michael. These figures are replicas of the miraculous image in Klosterlechfeld from the 17th century . Above it, putti are arranged in clouds . The representation of the Trinity in the central axis is completed by God the Father in the segment gable and the Holy Spirit in the excerpt . The gable is decorated with figures of angels. The assistant figures are two neo-baroque figures of holy bishops , the right sculpture cannot be clearly classified and the left represents the diocese patron Ulrich . The stipes shows the apostles going out into the world after they were sent out by Jesus .

Left side altar (women's altar)

Side altars

The two neo-baroque side altars are dedicated to the parents of Jesus - Maria and Joseph - and contain figures made in 1909. The altars were donated in 1910 by Heinrich Ritter von dall'Armi with his wife Antonia and designed by Josef Eisner. The gables are decorated with figures of angels.

Women's altar

In the left altar, the women's altar, in the center of the reredos is a relief of the coronation of Mary by God the Father with the Son and the Holy Spirit. The figures to the side show St. Elisabeth of Thuringia on the left and St. Therese of Ávila on the right . Saint Barbara is shown in the round excerpt . On the predella there is a rococo copy of the miraculous image of Mariahilf in Innsbruck Cathedral .

Relief in the right side altar (epistle altar)

Epistle altar

The relief in the right side altar, the Epistle altar , shows the Holy Family in Nazareth . This is flanked by two figures: St. Sebastian on the left and St. Florian on the right . The picture in the excerpt shows Saint Leonhard , the Seeshaupter Church can be seen in the background. The predella is adorned with a painting depicting the gentle death of St. Joseph.

pulpit

pulpit

The design of the neo-baroque pulpit comes from Josef Eisner, it was donated in 1913 by Heinrich and Antonia von dall'Armi. There are five symbols on the railing of the stairs, including the four evangelist symbols: in the middle the Lamb of God (Christ), next to it a winged person ( Matthew ), a bull ( Luke ), a lion ( Mark ) and an eagle ( John ) . At the pulpit there are four angels making music, which are marked with attributes and inscriptions of their perceptions. On the back wall of the pulpit, the tablets of the Law of Moses are shown in relief . The sound cover , which is carried by two angels, is adorned with five cartouches with symbols and lettering of the religious aids in the temptations of life: chalice and host ( sacrifice AND SACRAMENT ), ciborium ( PRAYER AND ADORATION ), tiara ( LOVE OF THE CHURCH ) , Crown of Thorns ( PATIENCE IN ALL SUFFERING ), Gospel Book ( HOLY GOSPEL ). The underside of the sound cover shows a dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit . The pulpit is crowned by a figure of the Archangel Michael.

Weigle organ

organ

The organ with a romantic sound was built by Friedrich Weigle from Stuttgart as Opus 400 when the church was expanded in 1909 and donated by Baroness Henriette von Simolin from Seeseiten - the daughter of Rudolf Knosp . It consists of 1,836 pipes that are controlled by a pneumatic action . The artistic design in the neo-baroque style comes from Josef Eisner and includes some angel figures.

In 2009 the organ was restored under the direction of master organ builder Konrad Bucher by the Munich organ builder Johannes Führer .

Anna Chapel

The baroque altar, originally from Eschenlohe and donated around 1910 by Baron von Beck von Schloss Hohenburg , contains the group of figures depicting the instruction of Mary by Anna . The figure of Anne comes from the 18th century. The extract shows a dove of the Holy Spirit and the predella shows Mary's visit to Elisabeth . The gable is decorated with figures of angels.

Next to the altar there is a folk altar in the chapel, which was created by the sculptor Egon Stöckle in 1995, as well as an Easter candlestick depicting the prophet Jonah, whose liberation on the third day from the belly of a fish is interpreted as a sign of the resurrection of Christ. In addition, at the altar there is a boxwood cross above Adam's skull, which refers to the following passage from the Bible: "For as they all die in Adam, so in Christ they will all be made alive" ( 1 Cor 15:22  EU ).

Other equipment

inner space

In the choir room on the right there is a historical replica of the painting of the sermon of John the Baptist on the Jordan by Bonifazio Veronese , made by Hermann Ebers. Opposite the southern entrance hangs a half- length portrait of Christ attributed to Joseph Schlotthauer . Opposite the pulpit is a Gothic Pietà from the mid-15th century. A landscape painting of the Calvary by Karl-Hubert Frosch hangs under the gallery . The picture is probably the design of the one in Einsiedeln , which was inaugurated in 1893. Around 1909, life-size sculptures of the apostles Peter and Paul were set up on the former choir arch where the side altars were previously .

Lilly Schultz designed the people's altar in 1969 in enamel and old brass .

In the tower there are not yet fully exposed frescoes of rarity. The wall paintings in the room, which functioned as a choir until the 15th century, show the coronation of Mary in the east and the adoration of the kings in the south. A depiction of the Madonna and Child probably dates from the Romanesque period . Below these images are some saints . A late Gothic silver reliquary cross from around 1500 has been preserved from the medieval church treasure .
