Reviews

Season 6 of DS9 brings together all the show's strengths: its excellent storytelling, here brought together into a cohesive story arc; its well-developed, three-dimensional characters; and its willingness to face up to all the shades of gray involved in tough ethical issues. "

- Holly E. Ordway: DVD talk

“Season 6 of DS9 combines all of the show's strengths: their excellent way of telling stories, here through a cohesive story arc, their well-developed, three-dimensional characters, and their willingness to face all the nuances that pose tough ethical problems . "

By the age of six at the latest, 'Deep Space Nine' only wrote TV history. The epic storylines, great drama and total brilliance that unfolded here on all levels from the narrative to the acting was and is simply breathtaking. […] 'In the pale moonlight' […] is perhaps one of the greatest Trek episodes ever, and certainly one of the best acting work that the famous Avery Brooks has done in this series. [...] The only thing wrong with this season, which is almost perfect through and through, is the end: 'The Tears of the Prophets' marks the weakest end of the season in the entire series, due to the changes necessary for Terry Farrell's departure: [ ...]. The dramatic emphasis on their departure inhibits the whole episode and, of course, dramatically does not fit into the concept at all. […] Even the new mythical element of the Pah spirits […] did not have a very good start due to the connection with this annoying conclusion. "

- Frank-Michael Helmke : Filmszene.de

And DS9 brilliantly handled the war. It wasn't solved in one or even a few episodes. As with the rest of the series, arcs developed and played out gradually. Entire multi-episode arcs fleshed out the pain and anguish of a true war. People dealt with the strife in realistic fashion. The war, much to our dismay, was not going well for our Federation. The Dominion seemed to be the superior force. And that, too, is a fascinating counterpoint in that our friends, the good guys, weren't winning. DS9 rarely took the easy path. […] Aside from a disappointing mirror universe episode and an odd cross-dressing Ferengi episode, the sixth season of Deep Space Nine is superb, intensely marching towards its inevitable end. Always doing more than simply scratching the surface, DS9 investigates the characters and the consequences of all its actions, rewarding the viewer with insightful and fully developed characters and situations. It is not the Star Trek you may be used to, and it is all the better because of that. "

- Erik Profancik, DVD Verdict

“And DS9 handled the war brilliantly. It wasn't broken up in one or even a handful of episodes. As with the rest of the series, story arcs developed gradually. Whole multi-episode arcs underpinned the pain and fear caused by a real war. People dealt with the struggle in a realistic way. Much to our regret, the war did not go well for our Federation. The Dominion seemed to be the dominant force. And that's a fascinating counterpoint in that our friends, the good guys, didn't win. DS9 rarely took the easy route. Aside from a disappointing Mirror Universe episode and a peculiar, transvestite Ferengi episode, the sixth season of Deep Space Nine is stellar, and is headed straight for its inevitable end. Always more than scratching the surface, DS9 examines the characters and the consequences of all their actions and rewards the viewer with insightful and fully developed characters and situations. It's not the usual Star Trek, but that's why it's better. "
