The Federal Statistical Office ( StBA ; Destatis ) is a German higher federal authority within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of the Interior . It collects, collects and analyzes statistical information on the economy , society and the environment . The processed information is published daily in around 390 official statistics .

history

On January 21, 1948, the statistical office of the United Economic Area of the Bizone (American and British occupation in post-war Germany) was created. After the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany , the statistical office of the Bizone was transferred to the federal authority organization. On April 1, 1950, the statistical office was given its current name.

The Federal Statistical Office in Germany thus stands as a newly created authority after the Second World War in the tradition of the Imperial Statistical Office and the Reich Statistical Office .

The presidents of the Federal Statistical Office are traditionally always federal returning officers .

Locations

The Federal Statistical Office has its headquarters in Wiesbaden (1673 employees) and a branch in Bonn (551 employees). The Federal Office also operates a so-called i-point in the federal capital Berlin (23 employees) and informs members of the German Bundestag , the federal government , the embassies as well as federal authorities, business associations and interested parties from the Berlin- Brandenburg area . In Wiesbaden, the Federal Statistical Office operates the largest special library for statistics in Germany.

tasks

The tasks of the Federal Statistical Office include providing objective, high-quality and independent information for politics, government, administration, business and citizens. It is also responsible for the methodological and technical preparation of a large number of statistics and ensures that these are created in a coordinated manner, using uniform methods and on time. For this purpose, the Federal Statistical Office works closely with the statistical offices of the 16 states in accordance with the federal state principle of the Federal Republic of Germany .

Legal basis

The obligation to objectivity , neutrality and scientific independence as well as the tasks of the Federal Statistical Office and the regulations on statistical confidentiality are regulated in the law on statistics for federal purposes .

In addition, every federal statistic requires a legal basis for its implementation and publication, usually a federal law or a statutory ordinance.

Copyright, use of data

Since January 1, 2006, the use of the Federal Office's statistics is license-free / free of charge. This was done analogously to the Statistical Office of the European Community ( Eurostat ), which already took this step on October 1, 2004. The commercial use of the data of the Federal Office is now permitted without license fees. It applies to any type of further dissemination of data , charts and graphics , provided that the Federal Statistical Office is the owner of the copyright and has the sole editing rights.

The standard publications of the Federal Statistical Office are marked with the following copyright notice: "Duplication and distribution, including excerpts, permitted provided the source is acknowledged "

Exceptions to this are the rights of use of third parties that are expressly identified in the works of the Federal Statistical Office.

The exemption from charges from January 1, 2006 also applies to the use of data from standard publications of the Federal Statistical Office that have already been published, even if these are noted otherwise.

The further dissemination of data from the Federal Office from January 1, 2017 requires the inclusion of the following source reference for the data used: "Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), year".

The Federal Statistical Office publishes a large number of periodic and one-off publications that can be downloaded free of charge from the statistical library .

  • The Statistical Yearbook was published from 1952 to 2019. All editions from 2006 onwards are available online - including all older volumes, including the statistical yearbooks for the German Reich in the period 1881–1943 and the statistical yearbooks of the German Democratic Republic , which were digitized by the Mannheim University Library. The statistical yearbook in printed form was last published in October 2019 ("Statistical Yearbook 2019", 68th edition). The reporting will continue in digital form.
  • The journal Economy and Statistics (WISTA) has been published since 1949 . In WISTA, in-depth analyzes from all areas of federal statistics, such as the economy, population, social affairs or health, are published and methodological innovations and projects are documented at national or European level. The scientific contributions are supplemented by short messages from the work of the Federal Statistical Office, such as national and international conference announcements as well as newly published publications. The magazine has been available for download free of charge on the Internet since 2001 as a complete edition, but also according to topic-oriented sections.
  • For all those who want to get quick and reliable information about statistical data and social science analyzes on current social developments in the Federal Republic of Germany, the data report - social report for Germany is now one of the standard works. It combines data from official statistics with those from social research and creates a comprehensive picture of the living conditions and attitudes of people in Germany.
  • Every Friday the Federal Statistical Office publishes the weekly statistical reports , which are available as a collection of tables thematically subdivided into the three subject areas “Population and Labor”, “Prices and Finances” and “Economy, Trade and Transport” or as a complete package.

A large number of specialist series on a wide variety of topics are published at different intervals. They are available in pdf and xlsx formats on the website of the Federal Statistical Office.

All printed publications of both the Federal Statistical Office and the Reich Statistical Office are available for inspection in the library in Wiesbaden and as part of the regional interlibrary loan system of the academic libraries.
