The Stiftland-Gymnasium Tirschenreuth (SGT) is the only grammar school in the Tirschenreuth district and the largest school in the Tirschenreuth district town . It gets its name from the area in which it is located, the Stiftland . The grammar school is currently attended by around 640 students who are taught by around 60 teachers . Since the 2006/2007 school year, the number of pupils has declined slightly, also as a result of the demographic change in the region and the low transfer rates to grammar school. In the course of the reintroduction of the G9, however, increasing numbers of students are expected again.

The school was founded in 1955 as a municipal secondary school with 112 students and eight teachers. At that time she was housed in the converted old hospital of the city , today's Johann Andreas Schmeller Middle School, in the Mühlbühlstraße. In 1959 the Paul Straub gymnasium was inaugurated.

One year later, in 1958, the school was elevated to an upper secondary school and finally, around 1964 to 1965, it was made the Tirschenreuth State Gymnasium. In 1965 the name was changed to the current name Stiftland-Gymnasium Tirschenreuth with around 500 students. In 1974 the grammar school moved to the newly built building on Stiftlandring. The triple gymnasium was opened two years later and the outdoor sports facilities were completed in 1980.

In 2007 the branch of the economic and social science high school with a focus on economics at the Stiftland-Gymnasium Tirschenreuth was approved.

Due to the age of the school building, a complete renovation of the building was decided in 2007. In June 2008, all of the lessons were moved to a container village consisting of 356 containers not far from the school. The total cost of the project was 14.5 million euros . The construction work was largely completed at the beginning of December 2009 after a construction period of 18 months. The official inauguration of the new school building took place on February 26, 2010.

Construction of the school gymnasium began in autumn 2019.
