history

Air New Zealand is based in Auckland

Air New Zealand was founded on April 26, 1940 as the national airline with the name Tasman Empire Airways Limited ( TEAL for short ) with the participation of Qantas , BOAC and Union Airways . In 1954 BOAC withdrew, in 1961 New Zealand bought the Australian shares. Thus the company was purely New Zealand and on April 1, 1965 it was renamed Air New Zealand Limited . In 1978, the domestic route New Zealand National Airways Corporation was integrated into the company.

With the acquisition of 50 percent of Ansett Australia in 1996, Air New Zealand strengthened its position in the Australian market. 1997 joined the Star Alliance . In 1999 the company won the "Globe Award for Best Airline to the Pacific" in the World Business Class survey. In February 2000 Air New Zealand took over the remaining 50% of the shares in Ansett Australia from the previous co-owner News Corporation . On September 13, 2001, the management of Ansett Australia was transferred to PricewaterhouseCoopers .

In mid-2012 it was announced that Air New Zealand was introducing a new color scheme, which consists of a black tail unit with the Koru symbol , a rolling fern leaf, and new lettering. Another variant is largely painted black. Air New Zealand then opted for the largely black logo.

On June 1, 2014 Air New Zealand ordered 14 additional A320 Family aircraft from Airbus . The planes are to serve the further modernization and expansion of the fleet. In the same month it was the first airline in the world to receive a Boeing 787-9 , making it the first operator of a Boeing 787 in Oceania . With the flight from Auckland to Perth on September 12, 2014, it was also the first airline in the world to start scheduled flight operations with a Boeing 787-9.

Air New Zealand's last Boeing 747-400 in 2010

On Friday, September 12, 2014, the last flight of the only remaining Boeing 747-400 ( aircraft registration number ZK-NBV ) from San Francisco to Auckland took place. This marked the end of an era for this type of aircraft at Air New Zealand after 33 years in which the Boeing 747 was in service in different versions. Air New Zealand will only operate twin-engine aircraft in the future .

On January 7, 2015, Air New Zealand ordered two more Boeing 787-9s.

The last flight of a Boeing 737-300 took place on September 6, 2015. This ended operation with this type of aircraft after 47 years. Air New Zealand will operate a pure Airbus short and medium-haul fleet in the future.

Air New Zealand is now one of the largest airlines in the Pacific and one of the largest companies in New Zealand . As of January 2015, it is 52% state-owned.
