The Tatra 138 truck was built in 1959 and was built in series at Tatra in Kopřivnice from 1961 . Prototypes already existed in 1957. It was developed from the smaller Tatra 137 .
The previous model Tatra 111 was replaced by the Tatra 138 . The "Tatra concept" with air-cooled diesel engine, central tubular frame, all-wheel drive and pendulum axles was retained. The round bonnet and the rounded driver's cab as well as the newly developed T 928 engine, a V8 diesel with 11,762 cm 3 and 180 hp (132.4 kW) were adopted from the Tatra 137 . The engine was suspended in an elastic manner and connected to the gearbox via a cardan shaft. The torsion bar suspension on the front axle was also adopted from the Tatra 137. On the other hand, semi-elliptic leaf springs were used on the rear axle.
By 1972, a total of 48,222 copies of the Tatra 138 were produced in different versions. Its successor was the Tatra 148 . Apart from the two-axle Tatra 138 NT 4 × 4 tractor unit, the 138 was only manufactured as a three-axle 6 × 6. It has been exported to around 40 countries. A typical version of the 138er was the three-way tipper Tatra 138 S3 or the variant with increased payload, Tatra 138 S3M.
