Detail view

The DANA is a howitzer of Czechoslovak origin on a wheeled armored vehicle . The acronym stands for D ělo A utomobilní N abíjené A utomaticky , in German: Selbstfahrlafette mit Autolader. The self-propelled gun is currently used by the Czech Republic , Slovakia , Poland , Georgia and Libya .

vehicle

DANA is a self-propelled gun on a wheel frame. In 1980 the vehicle was presented to the public for the first time. Although the caliber of 152 mm corresponded to the standard of the Warsaw Treaty Organization , the Czechoslovak People's Army always endeavored to produce its own vehicles and not be dependent on Soviet weapons imports. The requirements corresponded to the battlefield on which DANA was to carry out possible battles. Since the Warsaw Pact assumed a war in the well-developed Central Europe, the wheeled vehicle was chosen as the basis. At the time of its creation, DANA was by far the fastest self-propelled howitzer in the world. With its wheeled chassis, it reaches speeds of up to 80 km / h.

A further development in Slovakia is the ZUZANA artillery system , which is used not only by the Slovak army but also by the Cypriot armed forces.

technology

The basis for the vehicle is the 8 × 8 Tatra 815 truck . It combines a powerful engine with great mobility and off-road capabilities. Instead of the usual structure, DANA received a swiveling tower in which the howitzer was housed. Stabilizers are deployed for firing, which give the vehicle additional stability. DANA has a 12.7 mm machine gun mounted on a turret mount for close combat and air defense. DANA is armored all around, whereby the armor is only designed to be effective against fragmentation and small arms.
