The Tatra 72 was the successor to the 6-wheel wagon type 26/52 that the Tatra factory in Nesselsdorf brought out in 1933 .

The vehicle had the same overhead , air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine with 1910 cc displacement and 30–35 hp (22–25.7 kW) output as the Tatra 52 . The car had 3 axles, the rear of which were both driven. Its transmission had eight forward and two reverse gears. The maximum achievable speed of the 1800 kg car was 90 km / h. The chassis consisted of tubes, had a front axle with transverse leaf springs and pendulum axles in the middle and in the rear, provided with longitudinal leaf springs.

The superstructures were an open crew car, a break (closed box van), a 10-seater omnibus and a truck, as well as an armored car. A total of 328 vehicles were produced in four years.

The successor to the team car was the Type 82 from 1935 .
