The Tatra 17 was the successor to the car type 10 that the Tatra factory in Nesselsdorf brought out in 1925 .

The vehicle had a water-cooled six-cylinder OHC in-line engine with a displacement of 1930 cm³ and an output of 35 hp (26 kW). This new block engine with camshaft drive by a vertical shaft had a cylinder head made of light metal and was the first Tatra to have a battery ignition . The maximum achievable speed of the 1130 kg car was 100 km / h. It was first equipped with four-wheel brakes. There were different 4-seater, mostly sporty, open bodies. By September 25, 1926 , 205 vehicles had been built.

After that, vehicles were manufactured with an engine that was enlarged to 2309 cm³ and developed 40 hp (29 kW).

The successor to the Tatra 17 was the Type 31 from 1926 .
