The Tatra 97 was a mid-range car model from the Czechoslovak manufacturer Tatra . Of this smaller version of the Tatra 87 , 508 vehicles were produced from 1937 to 1939. The successor from 1946 was the modernized Type 107 , which was replaced by the Tatra 600 Tatraplan in 1948 .

history

The Tatra 97 was presented at the same time as the larger Type 87 in 1937 . The car had a 470 mm shorter body in the same design as the larger model. For this he received a newly developed four-cylinder OHC - boxer engine with 1749 cc capacity. Like the Type 77 A and T87, all models had an air guide fin. The first models still had pendulum indicators , later vehicles were produced with indicators on the front fenders.

Similarities with the KdF-Wagen / VW Beetle

Both the modern design and the technical specifications such as the air-cooled 4-cylinder boxer engine in the rear of the vehicle gave the T97 a striking resemblance to the KdF car , which later became known as the Beetle . It is believed that Porsche used Tatra's designs because it had to come up with a concept under enormous pressure. According to the book "Car Wars", Adolf Hitler said the Tatra was his "dream car for the German highways ". Ferdinand Porsche later admitted that he had learned from Hans Ledwinka when developing the KdF car .

Even before the Second World War , Tatra sued Porsche for damages, Hitler stopped the lawsuit and promised a settlement. After the so-called smashing of the rest of the Czech Republic by Hitler's Germany, the production of the Tatra vehicle was stopped immediately. It was not until 1961 that Volkswagen AG granted Tatra 1,000,000 DM for patent infringements on the engine and design.
