history

The Thanstein family was first mentioned in a document in 1218 with an Uto von Tannstein , but their ancestral seat at that time, Altenthanstein Castle , was about 2000 meters west on the so-called Old Thanstein above Dautersdorf , it is only preserved today as a castle stable . The "new" castle in Thanstein was built in the early 14th century by the ministerial family and then served as their ancestral castle.

In 1353 the castle passed to a branch of the Zenger family and later passed to the lords of Ebleben through the marriage of Margarete Zenger to the knight Georg von Ebleben .

In 1811 the entire castle burned down except for the keep , which was restored in 1887 and is the landmark of the town today. The round keep and some of the partially built-over wall remains of the former castle complex have been preserved.
