history
In the 1st century AD, the provincial capital Virunum on Magdalensberg , in Zollfeld, was established by the Roman Emperor Claudius as a successor settlement to the around 15 BC. Celtic capital Noreia in the province of Noricum .
The first Christianization of the area around 300 came from the Patriarchate Aquileia , with Virunum becoming a bishopric. Around 590 Slavs occupied and settled Carinthia as well as parts of today's federal states of Styria and Salzburg ; Virunum was mentioned for the last time in 591. The capital of the principality founded here by the Slavs had its seat of government ( Curtis Carantana ) in Karnburg at the foot of the Ulrichsberg; Today, Karnburg is a village belonging to the municipality, a few kilometers west of today's village of Maria Saal.
Before 767, the Salzburg bishop Virgil sent Chorbishop Modestus with clergy to Carantania. The second wave of Christianization in Carinthia was initiated from Maria Saal.
Karnburg was later also the center of the Carinthian duchy, Arnulf of Carinthia had an imperial palace here . In Karnburg, the Dukes of Carinthia were installed on the Fürstenstein , then blessed in the Marienkirche in Maria Saal, built in the 8th century under Modestus . In the 9th century the Duke's Chair was built, where the Duke swore the estates , gave fiefs and spoke justice.
In the second half of the 15th century, the Marienkirche was expanded into a fortress to protect the farmers during the Turkish invasions in Carinthia. After a fire it was rebuilt between 1670 and 1674, and in 1687 Mathias Landsmann cast a bell weighing 6,608 kg from cannons left behind by the Turks; the Maria Saalerin is the largest bell in Carinthia and sounds on the strike tone f sharp 0 .
In 1859 Maria Saal came to the diocese of Gurk and with that the respective Gurk bishop also became provost of Maria Saal.
In 1930 the community was elevated to a market.
