Baztan (Basque; Spanish Baztán ) is a municipality ( municipio ) with 7777 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in Spain . The Basque spelling is official today because it belongs to the Basque-speaking area of Navarre . With 376.8 km² the largest municipality in Navarre, it is located in the Pyrenees north of the main ridge and borders France in the north and east .
geography
The municipality consists mainly of the valley of the upper Bidasoa , also called Baztan in the municipality . In the north of the municipality rises the Olabidea (Spanish Olavidea), the actual upper reaches of the Ugarana (French Nivelle ), which flows into the Atlantic at Saint-Jean-de-Luz . In the northeast, tributaries of the Errobi (French Nive ) belong to the municipality. The highest point is the 1,418 m high Sayoa. The villages in the Baztan Valley are 200 to 300 m above sea level.

The main industries are agriculture and tourism. The Bidasoa River powers a small hydroelectric power station.
Neighboring places
North-west of the municipality of Baztan, the villages Zugarramurdi (209 m) with 233 inhabitants and Urdazubi / Urdax (100 m) with 348 inhabitants are small independent communities . They only border Baztan, France and each other. The Olsondo rises in Urdazubi / Urdax and flows into the Olabidea near the village, which is called Ugarana from here on.
