Vas [ ˈvɒʃ ] ( German Eisenburg , Slovenian Železna županija ; level NUTS -3: HU222 ; ISO 3166-2 code: HU-VA ) is a county in western Hungary .

geography

The county borders on Austria ( Burgenland ), Slovenia and the counties Győr-Moson-Sopron , Veszprém and Zala . It has 3,336.10 km² and 253,689 inhabitants (as of January 2016). The county seat is Szombathely (Steinamanger) , other important cities are Vasvár (Eisenburg) , Sárvár (Kotenburg) , Körmend (Kirment) and Kőszeg (Güns) .

The main river is the Raab . The landscape is hilly and merges into the Little Hungarian Plain in the north .

structure

With the government ordinance No. 218/2012 of August 13, 2012, the statistical small regions (Hungarian kistérség ) were abolished on January 1, 2013 and replaced by an approximately equal number of districts (Hungarian járás ). The small areas were retained for a while for planning and statistical purposes, but were finally abolished on February 25, 2014. There were 9 small areas in the county before it was dissolved. The small areas Celldömölk , Szombathely and Vasvár remained unchanged in their borders during the reform.
