Verner von Heidenstam
Carl Gustaf Verner von Heidenstam (born July 6, 1859 in Olshammar , Askersund municipality , † May 20, 1940 in Övralid , Motala municipality ) was a Swedish poet and Nobel Prize winner.

Life
Heidenstam studied painting in Paris and Rome . After completing his studies, I made long trips not only through France and Italy , but also through Switzerland and the Middle East .
In 1912 he was elected a member of the Swedish Academy . Heidenstam was one of the co-founders of the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper .
Heidenstam was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1916 for his series of novels Karolinerna (Karl XII. And his warriors) . This cycle is still his best known work today.
With his literary work Heidenstam decisively influenced the development of Swedish neo-romanticism . In his late work, Heidenstam increasingly resorted to historical themes.
Verner von Heidenstam also wrote significant poetry. Despite his conservative and patriotic attitude - Heidenstam was a member of the Reichsvereinigung Sweden-Germany - which is reflected in many of his poems, he demanded in one poem the introduction of universal and equal suffrage : Det är skam, det är fläck på Sveriges banér / att medborgarrätt heter pengar (that's a shame, that's a stain on Sweden's banner that citizenship means money). Modifying a winged word from Johan Ludvig Runeberg's Ensign Stahl ( Giv åt Stål en penning även / eller tag ock min - Give Stål a penny too [jokingly for medals] / or take mine too) he asked: Giv åt Stål en sedel även / eller tag ock min (also give Stål a [voting] slip of paper / or take mine too).
Verner von Heidenstam died on May 20, 1940 in Övralid. Heidenstam's birthday is still celebrated every year on July 6th, the so-called Övralid Day, on which the Örvalid Prize is awarded to writers or other cultural figures .
