Vilayet Erzurum

The Vilayet of Erzurum ( Ottoman ولايت ارضروم İA Vilāyet-i Erżurūm ) was a province ( Vilâyet ) of the Ottoman Empire . It was one of the Six Armenian Vilayets in the eastern part of Anatolia and had a large Armenian population until the genocide of the Armenians in 1915 .

The Vilayet Erzurum bordered both the Persian and Russian Empire to the east and northeast , the Vilayet Trebizond to the north, the Vilayet Sebastia to the west and the Vilayets of Bitlis , Mamuret-ül Aziz and Van to the south . After the Russian Turkish War of 1877/1878 , the Kars region was ceded to the Russian Empire, which administered it as Kars Oblast until 1917 .

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Vilâyet Erzurum covered an area of ​​29,614 km².

In 1914 a total of 673,297 of the population were Muslim , 134,277 Armenians, and only 4,864 Pontic Greeks .
