The Regional Municipality of Waterloo , also known as the Waterloo Region , is a Regional Municipality in the southwest of the Canadian province of Ontario . The capital and seat of the regional council is Kitchener . The population is 507,096 (2011), the area is 1368.94 km², which corresponds to a population density of 370.4 inhabitants per km². The regional parish is part of the Golden Horseshoe metropolitan area .
