Yasuo Mizui ( Japanese 水井 康 雄 , Mizui Yasuo ; born May 30, 1925 in Kyoto Prefecture , Japan; † September 3, 2008 in Apt in France) was a Japanese sculptor who lived and worked in France.

life and work

Yasuo Mizui studied technology and art at the University of Kobe after the Second World War . In 1953 he went to Paris and studied sculpture with Alfred Jannot at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts . One of his fellow students was César Baldaccini . From 1954 to 1958 he assisted the Catalan sculptor Apel·les Fenosa in his studio on Rue Saint Jacques. Fenosa was influenced by Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau . In 1955 Mizui exhibited for the first time in Paris at the Galerie Volnay .

In the 1960s and 1970s, Mizui took part as a stone sculptor in numerous sculpture symposiums in Israel, the Czech Republic, Germany, Japan and the USA. He was a participant in the first two German international sculptors symposia in 1961, the Kaisersteinbruch sculptor symposium in Gaubüttelbrunn in Lower Franconia and the symposium of European sculptors 1961–1963 in Berlin. With Karl Prantl , Herbert Baumann , Morice Lipsi and Hiromi Akiyama , he was a member of the jury of the Vyšné Ružbachy sculptor symposium in Okres Stará Ľubovňa in Slovakia in 1964 . In 1985, Minister Jack Lang received the Order of Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .

In 1985 he fulfilled Seita Ohnishi's wish to design a monument for James Dean, whom she admired . Together they visited Cholame , California , where Dean was killed in a car accident in 1955.

From 1985 Mizui worked with students at Savannah College of Art and Design on a project in Lacoste (Vaucluse) , where he set up a studio and lived there from 1997 until the end of his life.
