Zorn is a district of Heidenrod in the Rheingau-Taunus district in southern Hesse .

geography

Zorn is located in the western Hintertaunus on a plateau, the Zorner plateau , and in the headwaters of Morsbach and Busebach on the border with Rhineland-Palatinate . The Zorner plateau is connected in the northeast with the crosswise ridge of the Kemeler Heide and forms the watershed between the valley system of the Mühlbach , which flows north to the Lahn , and the Wisper valley in the south, which opens west to the Middle Rhine . To the east of Zorn, the 518-meter-high, wooded Graue Kopf rises as a local mountain . The Zorn forest markings continue behind the Grauer Kopf in a narrow strip to the field of Langenseifen and thus occupy the longest part of the ridge line of the Zorn plateau.

At the western boundary of the district on a mountain spur above the Morsbach are the remains of a tower castle called Hareschloß as a ground monument in the forest area under the Pfaffenbarg (445 meters) . The medieval moth Alte Schanz can be found in the Strutheck forest to the south .

Neighboring villages are Obermeilingen in the north, Algenroth in the north-west, Weidenbach in the west, Strüth in the south-west, Nauroth in the south-east and Langschied in the north-east.

history

The existence of the place Zorn can be traced back to the time around 1195. It was created at the intersection of old traffic routes, Kohlstrasse and the St. Goar - Frankfurt connection.

As early as 1150, Zorn was one of the earliest possessions of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen . In 1194 Werner von Bolanden received half of the Frohnhube from Count von Katzenelnbogen, that is, half of the Hof zu Zorn with all accessories to fief. A document dated June 25, 1335 gives information about this Frohnhube. In 1260 the place belonged to the quadrilateral area , from which it retired in 1509. Zorn was the place of justice and had market rights . The Reformation was introduced in 1533 . After the Thirty Years' War , Zorn was completely depopulated and in the 17th and 18th centuries the arson by French troops caused considerable damage. In 1806 the place came into the possession of the Duchy of Nassau .

On July 12, 1866 in the German War , a battle between Nassau and Prussian troops took place near Zorn , which is also known as the Battle of Zorn . After the end of the war, Nassau was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia .

After the First World War , during the Allied occupation of the Rhineland , the town was located in a narrow corridor between the bridgeheads on the right bank of the Rhine between the Americans around Koblenz and the French around Mainz. Until the military occupation by France in 1923, the area existed as a so-called free state bottleneck . After the Second World War , the place was in the American zone directly on the border with the French zone and thus became part of the state of Hesse.

The school was founded in 1683 and rebuilt in 1766 and 1911. In 1790 there were 44 houses and in 1840 there were 64 houses. The 18th century bakery was demolished in 1961 and the old town hall in 1975.

Territorial reform

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Zorn merged with 15 other municipalities on December 31, 1971 on a voluntary basis to form the municipality of Heidenrod . For a rage as to all other districts local district with the town council and mayor set up.

Place name

The spelling of the name Zorn has not changed for centuries. Possibly it is of pre-German origin and to be seen in connection with a place rich in water. That would also explain the name of the small Morsbach (mors = swamp). Whether a noble Heinrich von Zorne, who died before 1131, had his property here cannot be said with certainty. One can only assume that a tower castle, "the old Schanz", 600 m south of the village, belonged to his property.

traffic

Zorn is accessible for inter- regional traffic through the L 3031 state road, which branches off north of Langenseifen from the 260 federal road known as Bäderstraße and leads across the border as L 336 to the neighboring town of Strüth in the Rhein-Lahn district . In the center of the village at Brunnenplatz , the K 614 district road branches off to Algenroth and the K 677 to Obermeilingen .

Mining

The former Hermani roof slate pit lay on the Graukopf, east of the village . It was opened on March 18, 1870 and closed in 1955. Further south, on the edge of the spoil heaps of the Rosit slate pit beyond the boundary of Nauroth , the Heidenrod local history association and the Naturschutzhaus association set up a small educational trail on slate mining, which clearly shows the importance of the biotope structures in today's nature reserve. Another information path on historical forest use has been set up since 2012 on the ridge south of Zorn near the wind turbines and describes charcoal making, i.e. the production of charcoal.

Agriculture

The agricultural area of 188 ha is divided into approx. 30% meadows and 70% arable land. Meadows and pastures are used to keep nurses and dairy animals, while arable land is mainly used for growing grain and oilseeds (rape).

Zorn farmers cultivate 61 hectares as a sideline. 73 hectares are leased to foreign farmers.

Agricultural products are no longer grown for personal use as they used to be, but almost exclusively for sale.

The approx. 85 hectare Demeter farm "Hof Zorn" is managed according to the guidelines of biodynamic farming. The farm has its own cheese dairy and a small shop where the organic products are sold.
