Om Shanti Om (Hindi: ओम शान्ति ओम, Urdu: اوم شانتی اوم) is a 2007 Bollywood film directed and choreographed by Farah Khan. It stars Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles as the protagonists while Shreyas Talpade, Arjun Rampal, and Kirron Kher feature in supporting roles. Arjun Rampal is the antagonist in the movie. More than thirty-two Bollywood stars from yesteryear and today are referred to or appear in the course of the film, including thirty-one of them (not including the stars of the film) in one song alone.

Plot

Om Prakash Makhija (Shahrukh Khan) is a junior artist in the 1970s film industry. He and his friend Pappu (Shreyas Talpade) are trying to succeed in the film industry. Om's mother, Bela Makhija (Kirron Kher), inspires and encourages her son to become a success. He dreams of becoming a 'hero' one day on the big screen. He is in love with the country's heart throb and film actress, Shantipriya (Deepika Padukone), who is very successful and famous.

Om goes to the premiere of her upcoming film Dreamy Girl starring Shanti, and sneaks in claiming he is the actor Manoj Kumar. On another occasion, during a shooting of a film, where Om is acting as a junior artist, he notices Shanti is caught in the middle of a fire scene which goes out of control. Om jumps in and saves her, as no one else does. Shanti is very grateful and they become good friends.

Om asks her if she will meet him for one evening and she agrees. Om is ecstatic and plans a wonderful evening for her - using props and a film set and several backgrounds in a studio to woo her. He tells her that she deserves all the happiness in the world; all she has to do is ask. She tells him that she will and abruptly goes away, leaving Om confused.

The following day, Om tries to talk to Shanti on the sets of a film but she looks very preoccupied. He follows her into a make up room to talk to her, but ends up listening to her having an argument with top producer Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal) about a recent promise of Mukesh's to marry a businessman's daughter in return for funding of a film. Om is shocked to hear that Shanti is actually secretly married to Mukesh, and both Om and Mukesh are surprised to learn that Shanti is pregnant with Mukesh's child. Mukesh is adamant that his relationship with Shanti be kept a secret, because if the industry finds out she is married, not only will her career be finished, but also his upcoming film Om Shanti Om, starring Shanti, that had just been promised to be financed by the businessman mentioned. If it is found out she is married, he is afraid she will become very unpopular and the funding will be cut. Shanti does not care and demands that they get married in public and make their relationship official. Mukesh finally relents and promises her they will make it public soon. Om is heartbroken at this situation and goes back home with a heavy heart.

One night, Om notices Mukesh escorting Shanti to the set of Om Shanti Om. He curiously waits outside, looking from afar but not being able to see inside or hear what was going on. Inside, Mukesh tells Shanti that for her happiness, he is going to cancel the film, reveal their marriage to the public, and have a grand wedding here in this spectacular set under the chandelier and then destroy the set after they have the marriage ceremony in it. Just as Shanti bursts out with disbelief and happiness, Mukesh shows his true colors. He displays his anger and frustration at Shanti's constant demands to make their relationship public. He holds her responsible for his financial loss, and cancellation of this film that could have made him a very rich man. Then, Mukesh Mehra pushes Shantipriya and he sets fire to the set of the film and walks out, leaving Shanti trapped inside. She begs and pleads to him to let him out but he walks away from the burning set. Om had to hurry because Shanti is running out of oxygen. Om witnesses Mukesh drive away and tries to save Shanti, but Mukesh's guards beat him up and try to stop him from reaching her. After they leave, though, Om is able to break into the set, but is unable to reach Shanti because the set explodes. Om, beaten, burned, and half dead, is hit by a car owned by Rajesh Kapoor (Javed Sheikh), a well-known actor who is rushing his pregnant wife (Asawari Joshi) to a hospital. Rajesh takes Om to the hospital as well, but he dies on the operating table. Moments later, Rajesh Kapoor's son is born, and unknowing of who the man he hit with his car was, Kapoor names his son Om. The rest of the movie is accelled 30 years, to the life of Om Kapoor who is the reincarnation of Om Prakash.

Om Kapoor is a popular movie star and lives an extravagant life. He suffers from intense pyrophobia, a remnant of his past life as Om Makhija, which is revealed when he is shooting for a song (Dard-e-Disco) in his movie.

During a location hunt for Om's next film, Om and his crew choose the remains of the burnt Om Shanti Om set. As soon as he sees the set, Om begins to remember bits of his past life. Not long after, he meets Mukesh Mehra, who has been a top Hollywood producer for the past 25 years. Om remembers his past life in full and has emotional reunions with Bela and Pappu.

To avenge Shanti's death, Om hatches a plan with Pappu and several others, deciding to remake the film Om Shanti Om with Mukesh (whom he convinces to produce the film). During the audition for Shanti's role, the crew meets Sandhya (nicknamed Sandy), a big fan of Om's who is a Shantipriya look-alike. Om and the crew train Sandy to play Shanti and then launch their plan: Om plays mind games with Mukesh by taking him to the restored set of Om Shanti Om and then having Sandy act like Shanti to make Mukesh think that Shanti has returned as a ghost. However, their plan backfires when Mukesh sees Sandy running away from the set and chases her. While running, Sandy cuts her arm on a lamp, revealing to Mukesh that Shanti has not returned and that Om was deceiving him.

Having discovered Om's plan, Mukesh confronts him and they begin to fight. Suddenly, Sandy appears and tells Om that the night when she died Mukesh came back for Shantipriya's body but she was alive and breathing and he buried her under the chandelier. When Mukesh tries to kill Sandy, Om takes Mukesh's gun and shoots him in the leg. Mukesh lands right under the chandelier under which he and Shanti were to be married; Om raises his hand to shoot Mukesh once and for all but Sandy stops him, and then motions upward, where the hanging chandelier is. As he looks up, the chandelier starts falling because the ghost forces the chandelier to fall upon the cursed one, and it crushes Mukesh, killing him. After Mukesh dies,Om looks at the ghost happily and the ghost cries. Om is shocked to see Sandy emerge with Pappu; it is then that he realizes that the "Sandy" that he and Mukesh saw was actually the ghost of Shantipriya. Om snaps his head back to where the ghost was and catches one more glimpse of her tearfully saying a last goodbye before she disappears up the staircase. The movie ends with all the stars of the movie come out of a limo as if they are going to a movie premiere. The last person to come is Farah Khan. When she comes out, nobody is there and people are cleaning up.

Production

As featured in the film: Shahrukh Khan, whom Farah Khan had earlier directed in the film Main Hoon Na (2004) was supposed to do Happy New Year but scrapped that project to do this film.

The film's score and soundtrack are composed by the musical duo, Vishal-Shekhar with lyrics by renowned lyricist, Javed Akhtar. Composer A. R. Rahman opted out of this movie, as T-Series did not agree to share the copyrights of music with him and the lyricist.[2]

The film is based on reincarnation. Shooting of the film began in January 2007 at various locations in India. 31 of the Bollywood's stars put in a guest appearance for a special song in the film. [3] The film was released on November 9, 2007.

Om Shanti Om is all set to create another record of sorts by going in for an unheard of 2000 prints (worldwide) release. This is the highest number of prints (including digital) for any Indian movie till date.[4] Om Shanti Om has set a record of sorts as it has registered pre advanced booking of 18,000 tickets in a chain of theatres in national capital Delhi a couple of days before the advance booking was to start.[5]

Baba Films, production and distribution company, has offered a record Rs.110 million for the rights to the Mumbai Circuit, easily surpassing the highest amount ever paid for the territory of Rs.85 million for Jaan-E-Mann.[6]

SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment has reportedly sold the world rights for the film to Eros International for an amount between Rs.720-750 million.[7][8]

A book titled, The Making of Om Shanti Om written by Mushtaq Sheikh has been released after the release of the film. The book gives an insight about the production and happenings behind the camera of the film.[9]

Soundtrack

The soundtrack[10] for the film released on September 18, 2007. Indiafm.com gave the music 4 out of 5 stars saying Om Shanti Om is easily one of the most complete scores by Vishal-Shekhar and Javed Akhtar.[11] The track Deewangi Deewangi has a total of 31 stars performing in it. The composers won[12] the Best Composer award for the soundtrack at The 2nd Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong, 2008.

Reception

Ratings and Box office

Template:Infobox movie certificates The film was rated as "U/A" (Unrestricted with adult accompanied) by the Central Board of Film Certification of India[13] and PG–13 by the Motion Picture Association of America. Similar ratings were awarded in other countries such as Australia and the UK.[14][15]

Eros International, a leading distributor listed in London, confirmed that Om Shanti Om was the highest-grossing Hindi film of all-time raking in $45 million at the box office worldwide.[16]

Om Shanti Om opened across 878 cinemas[17] and has since grossed around Rs. 65,65,00,000 in its two week record-breaking run in India.[18] The movie was a hit at the U.S box office, grossing $1.7 million in its first three days, despite opening in only 114 theatres.[19]. Om Shanti Om became the biggest Bollywood movie of 2007 in the United Kingdom, earning a total of £972,146 (US $1,992,118 - INR 78,150,946).[20] The film also collected a gross of over $20 million worldwide in the first week, including collection of $13.5 million in India, $5 million in Pakistan, and over $2 million in North America. [21] The film has grossed $39,539,517 (Rs. 155,78,56,969.8)[22] worldwide, becoming the highest grossing Hindi movie ever. Even after being adjusted for inflation, Om Shanti Om stands in the top 10 of all time Hindi movies.

Reviews

Tajpal Rathore of BBC gave four out of five stars and stated, "Both a homage to and parody of Bollywood, this cinematic feast delivered straight from the heart of the film industry will have you glued to your seats till the end." [23] Mark Medley of National Post gave 3 stars and stated, "The film is a mess for all the right reasons; elements of comedy, drama, romance, action and the supernatural are packed in. But really, the plot is just a vehicle to get from one song-and-dance number to the next."[24] Raja Sen of Rediff.com gave 3 and half stars and stated, "Om Shanti Om is an exultant, heady, joyous film reveling in Bollywood, and as at most parties where the bubbly flows free, there is much silly giggling and tremendous immaturity. You'd do well to breathe in the filmi fumes, lift your own collar-tips upwards, and leave sense out of the equation. More cameos are written in than dialogues, so sit back and play spot-the-celeb. Or watch the Khan have a blast on screen."[25] Indiafm's Taran Adarsh gave movie awesome 4 out 5 star rating stating the follows " At the box-office, the film will set new records in days to come and has the power to emerge one of the biggest hits of SRK's career." [26] AOL India's Noyon Jyoti Parasara gave the movie 3 out of 5 stating, "The movie consists of all the elements that are essentially called the 'navratnas' of Indian cinema - from joy to grief to romance to revenge. And she mixes these well to cook up a potboiler, which is sure to be a run away hit." [3] SearchIndia.com gave the movie the thumbs-down stating that "A dispiritingly commonplace theme of reincarnation packaged in a disjointed, tracing-paper-thin plot with ho-hum performances by the lead actors renders a mediocre movie that only addled fans of Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan would love" [27] Rajeev Mansad of CNN-IBN gives Om Shanti Om 3 out of 5, stated "...A special mention must be made for the film’s excellent dialogue which so cleverly incorporates Bollywood’s oldest clichés into these characters’ everyday parlance..." [28]. Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India gave 3.5 of 5 stars stating the film is a total paisa vasool and a true tribute to Karz.[29] Hindustan Times's Khalid Mehmood gave the film 4/5 saying that Om Shanti Om is total brainless mazaa. [30] Sudish Kamnath of The Hindu stated, "Om Shanti Om' is a light-hearted tribute to Hindi cinema the way we know it and love it, in spite of its flaws, improvisation and implausibility. [...]That apart, the movie is a hell of a party, a bits-and-pieces blockbuster strung together with a series of laughs, songs and dances. SRK shows us why he's the rock star of our times. "[31]

Controversy

Om Shanti Om landed into a controversy with veteran actor Manoj Kumar, for showing him (actually his body double) in a bad taste. the premises with their sticks.[32] In a different scene Shah Rukh Khan (as Om Prakash Makhija) is shown giving a mock thank-you speech in a drunken state and later saying that he is Manoj Kumar. [32] Offended by the sequence, Manoj Kumar contrived to sue the makers of 'Om Shanti Om'. In response he told, "Indian audiences had made Manoj Kumar into an icon ... That icon has been wounded, made fun of.....

In the movie, Shreyas Talpade's character (Pappu) sneaks Manoj Kumar's movie passes to enter a movie premiere. When the real Manoj Kumar (film double) shows up for the premiere, the security guards ask him for identification, for which he produces his driving license with a photograph of him covering his face (a parody to his classic style of acting). Because the Security guards do not recognize him, they declare him a fraud and chase him out of moral action is more important than a legal action". He also said, "People who make such movies do not know the meaning of respect and decency. They are criminals."[32] Manoj Kumar also added, "Are the Mumbai police so stupid that they can't recognise Manoj Kumar and lathicharge him in the '70s when he was a star?”[33]. Manoj Kumar also alleged that Shahrukh Khan is communal [34]

Later, in a press conference Shahrukh Khan and director Farah Khan apologised for the matter. Shahrukh accepted his mistake and apologised, saying "It was a mistake to overlook the fact that it might hurt anyone. I truly apologise to everyone who think I have made fun of him. Honestly speaking, I didn't mean to show anyone in a negative manner or run down anyone". [35] Farah Khan even offered to cut the scene where Manoj Kumar feel that he has been hurt, but was refused on grounds that, as she has stated, "I [Farah Khan] was like his daughter. He said, ‘Betiyaan maafi nahi maangti ' (Daughters don't ask for forgiveness). I told him that he could've called me and scolded me". [35]

Later, Manoj Kumar said that though this incident has hurt him, he wishes to forgive, ignore, and move on, saying that he prefers to “see Ram in everyone and ignore the Ravana”.[36]
