The 10 e régiment d'infanterie de forteresse was an infantry regiment in the Kingdom of France and served during the Ancien Régime (thereafter with a few interruptions) until it was dissolved in 1940.

Before regiment numbering was introduced on January 1, 1791, it was last named Régiment de Neustrie in the royal French army .

Lineup and significant changes

  • 1776: Formation of the 1st and 3rd battalions of the Régiment de Normandie .
  • 1791: Renamed into 10 e régiment d'infanterie de ligne (ci-devant Neustrie) .
  • 1793: First army reform The 1st battalion was deployed to set up the 19 e demi-brigade de bataille and the 2nd battalion to set up the 20 e demi-brigade de bataille . This ends the regimental association and the line of tradition
  • 1803: Renaming of the "10 e demi-brigade d'infanterie de ligne" to 10 e régiment d'infanterie de ligne (de facto continuation of the regiment tradition)
  • 1814: During the first restoration , it was renamed the Régiment Colonel Général Infanterie in Perpignan .
  • 1815: During the reign of the Hundred Days , it became the 10 e régiment d'infanterie de ligne again
  • July 16, 1815: During the Second Restoration, the regiment and the entire Napoleonic Army were dismissed.
  • August 11, 1815: Establishment of the 18 e légion de la Corrèze and the 46 e légion de la Lozère . The low staffing levels of the two territorial associations led to the merger under the name 10 e légion de la Corrèze et de la Lozère .
  • October 23, 1820: Renamed 10 e régiment d'infanterie de ligne .
  • 1914: During the mobilization, the 210 e régiment d'infanterie was set up as a reserve regiment.
  • 1920: dissolution
  • 1939: Re-established as a fortress infantry regiment

Mestres de camp / Colonels

Mestre de camp was from 1569 to 1661 and from 1730 to 1780 the denomination of rank for the regiment holder and / or for the officer in charge of the regiment. The name "Colonel" was used from 1721 to 1730, from 1791 to 1793 and from 1803 onwards.

After 1791 there were no more regimental owners.

Should the Mestre de camp / Colonel be a person of the high nobility who had no interest in leading the regiment (such as the king or queen), the command was given to the "Mestre de camp lieutenant" (or “Mestre de camp en second”) or the “Colonel-lieutenant” or “Colonel en second”.

  • 1823: The regiment was used in the French invasion of Spain and marched into Spain with the 5th Corps de Spain Army (5 e corps de l'armée d'Espagne). Until 1828 it belonged to the occupation troops stationed there.

During the war, the "15 e régiment de marche" (15th marching regiment ) was set up from the 4th battalion of the regiment . The "29 e régiment de marche" was formed from the 8th companies of the 2nd and 3rd battalions .

Second World War

On August 28, 1939, the Région militaire, Center mobilisateur d'infanterie (CMI 72) in Mulhouse - Altkirch re-established the regiment as the “10 e régiment d'infanterie de forteresse” (10th fortress infantry regiment ). It belonged to the reserve "A" and together with the "371 e régiment d'infanterie" and the 2 e groupe du 159 e régiment d'artillerie de position (2nd group of the 159th fortress artillery regiment) formed the "105 e division d ' infanterie de forteresse ”(105th fortress infantry division). This was in the "Secteur fortifié 18" (or "Secteur fortifié de Mulhouse") of the Maginot line . After no fighting had taken place in this area, the regiment was demobilized and disbanded after the French surrender in June 1940.

Awards

In the event of a possible reconstruction, the members of the regiment have the right to wear the Fourragère in the colors of the Croix de guerre 1914–1918.
