The album received mostly positive reviews:
- laut.de gavethree out of a possible five points in 1989 and certified the singer had made a successful transition from country to pop music :
“With a lot of reverb, earthy rhythms, one or the other long-lasting melody and accented synth interludes, the American makes the mostly lifeless art of her new pop colleagues look pretty old. We're not talking about milestones in the genre, but at least the newcomer to the industry is giving back a fraction of what others in the past have never seen again, namely: life. Taylor Swift's take on pop is simple but efficient. No keyboards doubled to the point of vomiting, no jittery dub beats, no strobe lights on the ceiling. Here all that ends up in one pot that is needed to ensure a lively atmosphere on long car journeys. "
Ryan Adams released a cover album of the same name in 2015 .
