549th Grenadier Division

The 549th Grenadier Division was a German infantry division during World War II . The division was set up in Lithuania on July 11, 1944 . On October 9, 1944, the division was renamed the 549th Volksgrenadier Division . The division fought in East Prussia , but escaped enclosure by the Red Army with very heavy losses and made it to West Prussia . From here the unit was transported to Pasewalk in March 1945 for refreshment and, among other things, supplemented with the remnants of the disbanded Denecke Infantry Division .

In April 1945 the division was deployed on the Oder Front against the Red Army . In May 1945, the division went in Mecklenburg in US captivity .
